Michael Schenker Jumps Ship To Dean!!!!

Re: Michael Schenker Jumps Ship To Dean!!!!

I read somewhere? That the Stones showed so interest in Michael to
replace Mick Taylor (among a dozen others) So he called older brother
Rudy and said what do ya think? Rudy told him, Michael.. You like to party!!
But the Stones REALLY!! like to party. If you join the stones you'll be
dead in a few years. Maybe a bad career move? But I think Rudy
gave him pretty good advise.

Re: Michael Schenker Jumps Ship To Dean!!!!

mike being always on edge and over it is one of the reasons that he is so awesome !!! it does suck that he can't keep it together. nice DEAN !!! i hope he got paid!

Re: Michael Schenker Jumps Ship To Dean!!!!

That Dean headstock looks retarded...

UFO were one of the first "guitar" bands I got into when I started playing. During my first summer hire job my boss was way into UFO and he told me all about the band, let me listen to a few songs, and taught me some non-UFO riffs on the bass (which I forgot, of course). He was a pretty badass guitar player to boot, played a lot of shows in his youth apparently. Cool guy. Great stuff.

Re: Michael Schenker Jumps Ship To Dean!!!!

For those who don't know, there was a long article recently (in GW?) saying what a mess Schenker's life was....

He was basically completely broke, having sold all of his guitars on e-bay.
His girlfriend (or wife) had split after selling all of his recording equipment from his studio. He was living in something similar to a Motel 6 after losing his crib and about everything else. Like TO, I have long heard stories of how difficult of a guy Schenker is to get along with... I am actually surprised any company would pay this guy for an endorsement deal. The last MSG album that anyone heard was released in 1987 or 88 right?

Re: Michael Schenker Jumps Ship To Dean!!!!

TO - Don't get me wrong I am sure Vinnie is far more pro than Michael and much easier to deal with. Unfortunately I guess you never know which Michael will show up for the gig, session, press conference, etc. It is a major problem. He put on a great show at the Downtown from all accounts but I had heard other dates were not so good.

Cool pic of him and the guitar. It's very Schenker looking :D
Drunk or not, I am a lifetime fan of his playing.. old and new.

Scott, I have friends in Denmark that saw the Uli Roth/Schenker shows (they also write for metal mags), and they said Schenker was a mess!!

I'm a huge MSG fan, even when they attempted to go AOR.

However, Vinnie Moore will shred him into the ground any day of the week, and is much easier to deal with on a professional level, from everyone I know that's had contact with him. Too bad he's a DiMarzio endorsee!!
As much as I love Schenker's playing, I will admit that Vinnie Moore technically is a much better player and probally a little more stable for UFO at the moment.
I'm personally glad to see Michael with Dean guitars now. I own several original vintage Deans including some Vee's and always thought that they were a much better quality guitar than a Gibson.
Too bad Michael had to sell all three of his original black/white Gibson Vee's on eBay due to the hard times he went throught with his former manager and his last wife.

Re: Michael Schenker Jumps Ship To Dean!!!!

I saw Schenker with UFO in '99 (Walk On Water tour) and he was on top form that night, but a couple of months later the troubles kicked off again. Crying shame.

I hadn't heard until now that he sold his Vs on Ebay. Anyone know who bought them or how much they went for? That would be a cool guitar to own, but I think I'd have to say what Gary Moore has said about Peter Green's Les Paul. You can have it back any time for the same price I paid you for it.

Re: Michael Schenker Jumps Ship To Dean!!!!

SIMON_F, I saw the same show @ the Limelight! Schenker was on fire that night!! (Tho you probably saw it at a different venue)

MSGFan ... strange that you would say VM is a better guitarist, considering your name is MSG!!!

Let's face it: Schenker has done great things for Eurometal. He is, however, highly unstable.

Southampton Guildhall. Pete Way in a fetching bright yellow leopard print, if I remember correctly. :)

Re: Michael Schenker Jumps Ship To Dean!!!!

I think it is hysterical that Rudolf wouldn't let Michael join the Stones but UFO was fine!!! Yeah good chioce put in him in a band with Pete Waysted and Mogg. I can't even imagine how much alcohol was consumed by that band.

As good as Vinnie is technically he doesn't have the style that Michael has, you hear Michael play and you know it's him. Vinnie sounds like a guy heavily influenced by Michael, Steve Morse and Holdsworth. Nothing wrong with that but he doesn't have the unique voice that Michael's playing has.

Michael is one of those huge what ifs. When MSG came out they did great but revolving singers and Michael's demons crushed any chances they had of true superstardom. I saw the first tour with Molly Hatchet and Johnny Van Zandt (there's a Metal bill for ya!) and they were amazing. I thought for sure they would be huge, the second album did real well too but after that it was always a struggle to put out quality stuff and then aligning himself with McAuley, ugh! That and the horrible hair extensions mixed with the all Michael's other issues made him difficult to package and sell well as great as he is. I love him I hope to God he keeps an even keel but experiance tells me it is only temporary.

If you haven't picked up The Plot ( Michael and Pete Way) grab it. It is ripping hard rock with Michael really playing loose, very cool. Pete's vocals are kind of rough but this disc kicks butt!

Re: Michael Schenker Jumps Ship To Dean!!!!

I'm agreeing, Wattage, but with an asterisk! lol
That being ...
* ANYONE who plays melodic metal has been influenced by Schenker. His tone and playing are great. VM obviously loves his playing, and I'm sure MS is a big influence to him. I think that many people have written off a lot of the 80's Shrapnel guys as Yngwie wannabe's, without any voice of their own. Out of that whole craze, there were three guys that totally stand out and Vinnie Moore is one of 'em! (The other two are Greg Howe and his neighbour, Richie Kotzen)

T.O., You'll notice that I said V.M. was "technically" a better guitarist than Schenker, there's a lot to be said for Michael's phrasing and feel.

Yeah, yeah -- not picking any fights, MSG! :D Just observing, is all.

Re: Michael Schenker Jumps Ship To Dean!!!!

Asterisk noted and I am not trying to knock Vinnie at all. He is one hell of a player but he just doesn't have that "magic" that michael has IMO. I don't either so I guess I am being a bit overly picky probably because Michael is one of the giants to me.

Re: Michael Schenker Jumps Ship To Dean!!!!

Yeah, I hear ya, Wattage -- it would be like someone telling me that Levin is a better guitarist in Dokken than Lynch was.
Them's fightin' words!! :D

You're right there, TO. NOONE fit Dokken as well as Lynch.

Re: Michael Schenker Jumps Ship To Dean!!!!

Whatever happened to John Norum? Yeah, I'd say George Lynch fit that band, and honestly would be cooler, back in that band.
