I have a Gibson Les Paul Custom '57 Reissue, i e an all mahogany Les Paul with ebony fingerboard and no maple top. It's great and I love it, but the previous owner had changed the pickups to a pair of DiMarzios. A Norton at the bridge and 36th Anniverary PAF in the neck position.
The pickups are not bad at all, but I think I can find something which suits me better.
The pots and caps are all stock and changing them to an RS-kit will probably open up the sound a bit. But I still feel that I need to find other set of pickups.
I am looking for something which is more mid focused with better string definition. I already have a big bat humbucker Les Paul (an R9), so I don't need that kind of sound. I will use it with a slightly overdriven vintage Marshall Super Lead with a matching vintage Marshall cab.
The Norton isn't bad, but more mids and string definition would suit me better. Any ideas? A humbucker which sounded close to a SD Custom Soapbar (which I have in the bridge position of my Gold Top R6) would probably be close to what I am looking for.
I have a 59 which I used to have in the neck position in a LP Standard which I sold five years ago. I liked that, but perhaps a Jazz of something else would give me more bite and string definition. (Less flute, if you now what I mean.) Or are the 59 and Jazz similar to the 36? Any ideas?
The pickups must look like humbuckers (black without covers), so Phat Cats and P-Rails etc will not work for me.
I play classic rock, 70's hard rock, e.g. riff based music with plenty of big open overdriven chords.
Thanks.
