hi fellaz, what do ya advise for an MIM strat with a alder body and a rosewood fingerboard to get an hard rock sound?i'd betta go with the single coil sized hums:)thanx for the answers in advance!!!rock on:firedevil

Re: MIM Strat/ to get an hard rock sound!!!

JB or 59 or Custom

Any of those would work just fine.

Re: MIM Strat/ to get an hard rock sound!!!

prolly cc bridge

and either cool rail or hot rail for middle & neck

any specific tone you're lookin for?

Re: MIM Strat/ to get an hard rock sound!!!

no i aint looking for any..i've got an hard rock band(me=vox, guitars,),we're gonna put out an demo...just need an general hr sound...not any specific tone...

Re: MIM Strat/ to get an hard rock sound!!!

A PG, JB, Full Shred, or a Custom-series (C, C5, CC) would work great for hard rock. What are you missing in your tone?
E: a '59, PG, or a Custom would work great.

Re: MIM Strat/ to get an hard rock sound!!!

i've opened another topic entitled as the differences between hot and cool railsbut answers dont come ?can ya tell me the difference friends?

Re: MIM Strat/ to get an hard rock sound!!!

Cool Rails is more vintage, but still VERY far from vintage. Hot Rails is a good hard rock pup, some find it shrill, though. Iron Maiden didn't.

Re: MIM Strat/ to get an hard rock sound!!!

yeah cool rails have a more vintage vibe without actually having a vintage tone, it's weird

hot rails have more low mids & bass

but yeah man if you're droppin money on all new pickups it'd make sense to go for something more.... specific

Seems like there are a lot of reccommends for full size humbuckers in above posts, even though you asked for SC size. If you can use the full size, Seymour Duncan Has great selections. You will have to get another pickguard, but I bet your body is routed to accept the full size humbuckers which I would opt for first.

SD seems kind of light to me in the Hard Rock selection of SC sized hums. You may want to try out Dimarzio to get more into rock with SC size humbuckers. They have SC size hums that will get you into Les Paul territory.

What's your amp? I've been playing with Hot Rails/Cool Rails combos for a while now. Through my Mesa the Hot Rails was mushy, lifeless, dull- but the high output could help you OD your amp. The Cool Rails in the bridge sounds awesome though- very clear and articulate with gain. It can excel at rhythm playing- not metal or thrash, but hard rock rhythm. With some tone knob and gain control tweaking I am able to easily get full HB tones, p90 like tones, and SC tones out of it. One thing that I haven't been able to get out of either pup is a good palm mute rhythm sound... but that's probably just the nature of the guitar. Definitely check out Dimarzio's selection of SC sized HBs before making a decision, especially if you buy new, because with their bigger selection you'll have better luck using the return policy to find exactly what you want.

I say go with a full-sized hum like a JB or a 59 or a Pearly Gates , even a Screamin Demon or go with a Phat Cat. None of the SC hums will give you that punch. You can get a HSS pickguard cheap and in most modern strats, it's already routed for a bridge hum. Why pay the same amount of money for less tone.

The JB Jr. is awesome. It is perfect for hard rock styles. It is a really hottt pickup.
