Not to me, under most circumstances ...and a large part of your decision might depend upon what part of the eighties the guitar your are considering was made. The transition from CBS to current mgt was made at that time. Also, is it a "special edition," reissue, or have anything else distinct about it ?

there are "japanese vintage" paisley teles from the 80's on Gbase for $1200.... sort of defeats the good guitar for cheap purpouse of mij fenders
i played a realy sweet 69' RI olympic white 85' MIJ strat.... ok so it had a funky kahler trem on it, wieghed 10lbs and had one of the thinnest C's ive ever touched as well as the smallest frets ive ever seen,.... but it had so much freakin' MOJO!!!. it had all kinds of natural wear, the pick gaurd was discolord and chiped the finish had tanned and worn through to the brighter under coat on the edges if it hadnt been such a complete boat ancor i would have put down the $400 it was going for easily

The only '80's strat that I would pay that much for is a "Bowling Ball" strat, and that's only because I had a fascination with them at the time and would love to have one now.
I think that $800 is way too high because you can get an equivalent-quality guitar for much less dinero.

Is the output jack on the pickguard where the 2nd tone control should be? Is the back routed for the trem springs or is the trem completely top mounted? Like this one:

If it is like this model, I would pass on it. These guitars have value to collectors for their unusual features, but aren't really regarded as great players.
IMHO you can get a much better used American Standard, new Highway 1, G&L, etc... for less money

I also tried the '69 reissue at the time. It had a standard trem, though. That neck was like a pool cue ! At the time, my main axe was a Fender Bullet, and that thin neck felt oh-so-natural. But for the lack of a few ( well, few hundred) bucks, I would have walked out with tha puppy. Anyone have one now ?
