not micing for recording but my main rig is a C30 combo with an open back, and a C30 Extention cab with a sealed back.... most of the time the mics are on the extention cab.... It's the best of both worlds.. my old drummer loved it as the open back combo allowed him to hear me perfect... and the sealed back cab gave me the extra bass i need out of that amp
A number of years ago, Mesa produced a vertical 2x12 cab with open back in the top half (C90 ?), and a sealed bottom half (EVM12L). All I have ever read was positive.

I use a 2-12 open back Avatar on top of a 2-12 closed back. I like it, the open back spreads the sound out more while the closed back adds the tight lows.
Interesting, I've been thinking about running a celestion super 8 (in an open back Kustom tube 12a) in parallel with an avatar closed back cab with a hellatone 60 in it, guess i'll have to try it as soon as I figure out how to hook up the super 8 without cutting up perfectly good cables. If it sounds good I might get an open back cab with another 12" in it.
I have an old K&K Audio vertical 2x12 1/2 open and 1/2 closed that sounds great! Pre-rola G12H30 in the open half on top and a G12-65 on the closed bottom. Fat, crisp and punchy all in one.

I would LOVE to see a pic of that cab, no matter the condition! Not only is the vertical cab 2x12 overlooked IMO, the top open/bottom sealed is a tasty and valid twist.
I had a friend who had the 4x12 half open half closed mesa....circa 1991. It was way kewl. Better than the 1960 Marshall cab that another friend had....not that the marshall cab was a slouch by any means!
My Traynor combo is open backed (1X12) and it sits on a closed back (1X12) cab . . . it's a great mixing of both worlds. You get a tight, focused, open airy, kinda sound . . .
