Mixing speakers in a cab

Re: Mixing speakers in a cab

It's not a combo that many people use, but I love the way the V30 mixes with an Emi Cannabis Rex. The rex smooths out the v30 a bit, and the v30 brightens up the C. Rex a bit. Together I can get 'em to work for just about any application.

Re: Mixing speakers in a cab

old zombie thread i know but i wanna correct this

To clarify this statement,

Matching OHMS is IMPORTANT. You don't wanna run one 4 ohm and one 8 ohm. Run matching ohms, you can always wire it in series or parallel to give you the ohms needed ala two 8 ohms in series equals 16 ohms mono.

that is correct

moreover, efficiency does play a role in terms of overall wattage.

For example,

Take my 212 cab which has a V30 and a CL80. The V30 is 60 watts where as the CL80 is 80 watts, thus the total of my cab is rated 120 watts. With speakers you don't add them together but rather you take the lowest ratted speaker and double it (in a 212 cab that is).

So a Cl80 (80 watts) and a G12H30 (30 watts) in a 212 cab would be rated 60 watts and NOT 110 watts.

Get it>?

this is right and wrong at the same time. efficiency has nothing to do with power rating. power rating is how much wattage the speaker can handle which is what he is talking about and he is correct about what he says but thats not efficiency. efficiency is how sensitive the speaker is. a v30 for example is 100db @1w@1M, a g12m is 97db. that means the v30 will be louder at the same amp setting. if you mix an efficient speaker with a less efficient speaker the louder speaker will bring more of its character to the over all tone of that cab. isnt necessarily a bad thing at all though, matchless did that in some of their cabs and they sounded great

Re: Mixing speakers in a cab

Didn't read the whole thread, but the way I roll is my main tone... the dry cab... is all one model. The Celestion G12-80. The wet cabs have modern Classic Lead 80s. They don't sound anything like their vintage predecessors, but they have tons of headroom which I like on my FX speakers.

Re: Mixing speakers in a cab

I like mixing Alnico with Ceramic magnet speakers in a multiple cab because you can acquire the best of both tones of speaker types.

Re: Mixing speakers in a cab

I've found that I really prefer a 412 mixed top/bottom instead of X-pattern,,,,,,,,,or just a regular single-model cab.
A single-model cab combined with another cab that's loaded with a different model can really get that massive stereo-thickness if spread apart.

Re: Mixing speakers in a cab

I have a diy V30/MC90 frontloaded 2x12, sounds great

Also, an 80's Carvin frontloader 4x12, top row g12-65's, bottom row g12k-85's, bit darker lows more vintagey mids, packs a serious punch
