Modded TS9

Guys
Im looking for tubescreamer, I just dig SRV's tone. Now do I understand correctly that they work best with a LOUD tube amp? would I be correct in saying that the overdriven tones im after wont come from the amp at low levels because its not being pushed?

My next question is THE Tubescreamer to get, one with the JRC4558D chip to get that classic sound?

How bout this one then?

This modded pedal from the US will cost about the same as an unmodded one here in OZ. Is about extra AU$30 for shipping.

Are modded pedals that great?

Thanks guys.

Re: Modded TS9

A Forum bro offered a spina modded TS-9 for 90$ (?) a month ago...

I'm no expert, but did some TS research lately:
I dunno about the hype of the NOS JRC4558D chips ... but afaik you can find this chip im many 80s japanese radios and it was a 0.20$ part in the 80s...
That said: different chips sound different!
Kinda fun that this pedal is chipped with different chips

Re: Modded TS9

get the pedal first, and if you dont like something about it, get it modded. some like it, some don't.

Re: Modded TS9

A lot of people put emphasis on the chip being used in the Tube Screamers and SD-1's and whatnot. Yes, the chips do make a difference in the sound, but the biggest difference in the sound of the distortion is changing the clipping diodes.

I recently placed an order on smallbearelec.com to build a clone of the LandgraffDynamicOverdrive, and I bought 4 different types of chips and 5 different combination of clipping diodes, which I'm going to make selectable via a rotary switch. Hopefully, everything I planned on putting in there will fit. I'm going to borrow a friend's breadboard to make sure it'll work first.

The chip alone doesn't make the modded TS that much better...It's the end results of alot of changes that does.

Exactly. Coming straight from the master himself  :laugh2:

Re: Modded TS9

I have a couple of John's modded TS-9's and I prefer them to my stock TS-808.

As for whether the amp has to played loudly when driven by a TS-9 to get SRV's tone: YES! :laugh2:

IMO, the output tubes have to be working hard (which means playing fairly loud) not just the preamp tubes to get SRV's tone.

However, you can crank a small 20 watt amp, like a 5E3 Fender Deluxe or Deluxe Reverb, and overdrive it with a TS-9 or TS-808 and get close to SRV's tone...if you have the taste, the soul and the chops.

Doesn't have to be a cranked 50 watt or 100 watt amp...it could be a cranked 20 watt amp and you'll still get a nice SRV type tone.

Thanks as always for the nice plug buddy....

Lew....I wouldn't say my modded pedals are better...They are different though...Just some different spices placed into the tonal recipe and there are alot more guys that like the TS as it is stock....It's just one of those great pedals and I just try to enhance on that really..

The pedals you modded for me are better! :laugh2:

When I play a stock TS-9, I feel like like it needs to blow its nose and clear something out of the tone! :laugh2:

Tubescreamers sound to me like they have a chrome bubble surrounding the tone that gives them a compressed tone or chromey sheen that I want to break through so my tone can reach out into the clear blue sky.

I asked you to see if you could remove or minimize that quality and you did.

That's why I like my Spina modded TS-9 "better". :)

Lew.....If you say so brother....I won't argue with the true master....There's that word again! :laugh2:

Re: Modded TS9

Well you know John, I'm not one of those guys who likes a super-thick, super-saturated, super-dense tone...I like to hear a little AIR and SPACE in there. That's what I think you accomplished with my TS-9's. Lew

Is this basically what the Tweak Fuzz is?

I should just get the stock TS9 then? Does this pedal not have the modifications that improve the TS9. Is it something more than just replacing the chip?

Yes there are quite a bit of mods needed other than just the chip...The chip by itself is pretty subtle at best...You need caps and resistor changes if you don't like the stock version TS9,but why not wait and see if you like the pedal as is first? You haven't heard the stock version yet? :smack:

Re: Modded TS9

Personally I would go for a Spina or Keeley modded TS9. Look for audio clips of both pedals in action and go from there.

I'm gearin to get my hands on a Keeley TS9 to throw in front of my Mark III.

I've no clips for my modded TS9s,but I Know I can save you about half the price of the Keeley TS9....

I have Both. I have a TS9 RI and I use this in a Super Reverb Ala SRV and I have a Modded one that Stratdeluer97 did for me I use this in a Deluxe Reverb.

To compare the 2 side by side the modded TS9 has a thicker bottom and a lot mor OD that the stock TS9. This is not to say that a stock TS9 is bad.... the modded one that John did for me is just...... better. I use the stock one in a Super Reverb because bottom is not difficult to get in a 4 10" speaker amp. The Deluxe has less headroom and does not hold the bottom as well. This is why I use them both. What Amp are you going to use this pedal In? This will have a lot to do with how well it will work. If you use this in a Twin it can be set up to work like a channel switch. Thats how I use it in my Super. In the Deluxe I use it more as a slight boost and it increases sustain a little. The Deluxe lacks the headroom that the larger amps do. It also will have to do with how loud you play. If you use a 40 or 50W amp and run the volume at about 50 to 75% the Amp will overdrive on its own with the guitar dimed. If you roll the volume back on your guitar it will clean up nicely. In a lot of situations I needed the TS9 early in the evening, as the night wears on the amps heated up pretty well I did not really need the help as much, so this pedal does interact with the tubes. In some cases you can use it as a boost and set it with slight amount of gain. Bottom line is they are both excellent pedals. It really just comes down to what you want the pedal to do.

Re: Modded TS9

like i mentioned, Im after a tubescreamer because I really dig that sound SRV gets with his. From what I read here, a (properly) Modded TS9 will sound closer to this than the current model TS9. I also dig the tones Mike McReady and Kirk Hammet get when they step on theres.

I would be using a stock Hwy 1 Strat, into a Marshall TSL60 head (awesome cleans) into 1936 twin cabinet.

I thought i would get the modded TS9 to start of with because it is the same price as a stock one. I dont really want to go through the hassle of buying one, not being 100% happy with it, then having to send it over to the states to have it modded, when I could have it done to start off with.

So this pedal above, does not have the mods that would make it like an early SRV Tubescreamer?

I looked at the Keeley and analogman pedals, but i think they are going to be a lot more expensive with exchange rates Etc etc

Im getting confused now with all these different mods that can be done. They should name one the SRV mod!!!!!!

Thanks everyone for your input.
