Monster cables: yay or nay?

Re: Monster cables: yay or nay?

I didn't think they were bad but not particularly good for the money.

I like Spectraflex cables a lot. I use planet waves too sometimes.

Re: Monster cables: yay or nay?

I avoid their products because of their business practices, and because they are one of the worst values out there.

My guitar-to-board cable is a Bullet coil, and I am very happy with it. My board-to-amp cable is a Yorkville Studio One, and I'm very happy with that as well. I build my own pedal board cables using Mogami conductor.

Re: Monster cables: yay or nay?

I heard about the time they sued pixar because of "monsters inc.", but i thought it was a rumor.

Re: Monster cables: yay or nay?

Never cared for Monster as you're pretty much paying for the name. They have confusing marketing (i.e. 3 guitar cables available - you can't make 1 awesome cable at a reasonable price?)

Before I was into guitar, I was into building my home theater. I needed alot of speaker wire for my surround system. I remember all the sales guys trying to sell me Monster speaker cables. I could get an entire spool of better quality speaker wire from Radio Shack.

Anyways, I've had nothing buy positive experiences using Spectraflex cables. Highly recommended.

I used to work at a place that sold Monster home theatre cable. I was told to push that crap too. The reason is that they have a MASSIVE mark-up (over 60% in some cases), and stores make huge cash money on Monster product. I imagine it's the same with guitar cables.

Re: Monster cables: yay or nay?

Hmmm. Looks like i wont be buying anymore when the time comes that i actually need more cables.

Re: Monster cables: yay or nay?

Good cables, good warranty.

Horrible business practices, poor bang/buck ratio.

Re: Monster cables: yay or nay?

i have three monster jazz 500 '12 cables, a 12' studio 1000, a 21' bass 500, some 9" jazz 500 jumpers, and a few of the std 100 line stuff. i didnt buy any of the std stuff and they are ok but ive never bothered to a/b them with anything else and typically i dont use them.

the jazz cables and studio cable i bought at gc when i worked there so got a great deal on them and i have done some a/bing with them. i also use some george l's have have planet waves, whirlwind, proco, and some others that slip my mind.

i use the george l's, jazz 500 and studio 1000 cause they all are good, but they sound different. the george l's is the brightest, the studio is the fattest.

Re: Monster cables: yay or nay?

Monster "in order to protect their trademark" have gone to ludicrous lengths.

I recommend Spectraflex as well.

Re: Monster cables: yay or nay?

The entire Monster catalog, not just the guitar cables, is severely overpriced. The quality of the products is fine*, but as others have stated, the cables are not a good value unless you value the Monster name.

*I had a Monster guitar cable that would not fit in one of my guitar's jacks. The plug, I assume from the plating, was just a hair bigger than my other cables.

I have both Monster and the Bullet cable stuff. The Bullet cable is brighter, with a broader tonal spectrum, better harmonics, but the monster rock cable I have has a very focused sound. It works well with amps that have a lot of crunch/gain/harmonic detail. Otherwise, I think that the monster cables kinda kill some of the good tones that good 3d-sounding pickups generate.

I tend to use the bullet with lower gain playing and the monster for when I set my amps to kill.

Re: Monster cables: yay or nay?

Let's lay out some pros and cons:

Pro
----------------------------------------------
Warranty (I broke one (being stupid) and got a free new one as soon as I walked in the store)
They sound better than cheap cables

Con
----------------------------------------------
Other brands might not replace a broken cable
Very little strain relief on the hi-end Monsters
Not the most durable
Their business philosophy is not worth supporting
People might look at you funny for using Monster cables

has anyone replaced the connectors on their higher-end Monster cable? I haven't broken the shrink wrap on the connection (after you screw the barrel back), so I can't see if the wire is easy to solder or not.

Re: Monster cables: yay or nay?

I usually avoid it because it's not sexy. I like things to be either plain, inexpensive, and functional, or kind of pricey and sexy-looking. Monster doesn't have the caché that I've come to expect in upmarket cables. They certainly try, when they get expensive enough, but at those prices you can get something more luxurious from a company that knows a lot more about making cables.

Sometimes I'll go looking for a cable, and Monster just happens to be at a sweet spot in the offering pool, where it makes sense. So if their cable happens to make more sense at the time, for the application, than the others in the store that day, then I buy it. Otherwise, not so much.

The gold rock cables I have are epoxied at the ends where they solder the connection.
