More natural sound for shred guitar?

I'm using the emg 81/60 set and I'm beginning to find that they're a bit noisy and a bit mushy when I'm playing and it's become quite annoying(not talking about feedback). I've turned my gain way down and that kind of over-gaininess is still very present. I want a pickup set that sounds a bit "clearer" I guess... Suggestions?

Er, firstly, what sort of guitar are these pickups in? Secondly, what amp are you using and how do you set its controls? Thirdly, I am not sure what "over-gaininess" means. Comments such as, over-compressed or lacking dynamic range, I would understand.

Finally, are your EMGs hard-wired, Quik Connect or "solderless"?

ESP ec-1000, peavey valveking. It's difficult for me to describe I think they're a bit to strong and yes they are compressed sounding and they are solderless

Re: More natural sound for shred guitar?

first of all... EMGs shouldn't be mushy... at all. UNLESS... you're using the valveking's gain channel without the gain boost. that's the mushiest sound you'll get, ever. if that's the case, then just get a cheap overdrive pedal and that'll fixit right up.

second of all... how high/low do you have the pickups set? have you messed around with them at all? changing the height definitely changes the tone, compressed-ness, clarity, and tightness.

I have a cheaper version of your guitar, the LTD EC-401w. I exploited its Quik Connect loom to swap out the stock EMG-81/60 pickups and install SD Live Wire Classic II active 'buckers. If you have the modular solderless plug-in connection system, your options are somewhat restricted.

"Shred guitar" and "natural sound" in the same sentence it's an oxymoron to me. :naughty:

Re: More natural sound for shred guitar?

Let me the first to say, having owned a valveking for 2 yrs.......It is crap. The amp is voiced to be mooshy. The clean, and overdrive channel are just a big, muddy, mess. The boost does take care of the mud a little, but it also thins out the sound a ton. Every pickup I had in my Les Paul would sound like mud through the VK.

The other thing I didnt like is that it doesnt take pedals well at all. If you want to get rid of the mud........im sorry, but you're going to need a new amp. Or a new speaker for the VK

To me the most percussive and least mushy and most natural ('59 like) Duncan pup is the Screaming Demon. If your stuck with actives, I don't know. ;)

Re: More natural sound for shred guitar?

First thing you wanna do is trade your amp in for a Twin reverb and don't put any effect between your guitar and the amp.
And don't turn the amp up past 3. And don't use the reverb.

You're welcome.
