Most controversial thread of nearly all-time

Aceman

I am your doctor of love!
So, I got onto Pinterest. Lots of cool stuff there; Zombie pics, Guns, Camping ideas, Girls (naturallY) and of course....guitars!

I keep a board of what I consider unique, interesting, odd, funny, famous, and cool guitars. Go to Pinterest.com and find the board called Sex Strings and follow it if you want.

Anyway - now for the controversy part. After a couple of thousand pins on here....

I declare there are way more and way sexier basses than guitars. Bass builders just freaking OWN. Amazing wood, styles, shapes etc. Yeah - there are a TON of guitars, but it is a lot of the same them, same colors, same graphics even. But hand made basses? DAMN!!!!!

Discuss...but go look at the board and then you tell me.

I’m sure you could embed images here. Ones that aren’t nsfw.

Re: Most controversial thread of nearly all-time

I have a Cool Guitars, Cool Guitar Exercises and a 50s Atomic Architecture pins. I tend to see the same PRS guitars on there, so I am sure PRS floods that with shared pictures.

Re: Most controversial thread of nearly all-time

PRS is a great example of something I rarely pin. They all look exactly the same. Maybe every once and again a really really sweet flame 24...

Re: Most controversial thread of nearly all-time

I think it has to do with guitar players being super conservative and after the "vintage" vibe whereas bass players have always been open to wacky shapes, finishes, colors, etc... You do any out of the ordinary on a guitar and people freak out.

Re: Most controversial thread of nearly all-time

Are you talking about Googie designs?

Yeah, love those. But I dig the design of old motels, 'futuristic' interior design from the 50s-70s, and stuff like that.

This has always been the case. For as rebellious as guitar playing is supposed to be, it isn't reflected at all in what sells and what is universally praised among guitar players.

You guys are scaring me

Going to my safe place now

Re: Most controversial thread of nearly all-time

I like wood, I think I could be called a purist. But I hate "furniture".

B :D

Re: Most controversial thread of nearly all-time

It's a similar phenomena to as when woman age they add more sparkle, bedazzle, highlights and jewelry to their appearance -from the tops of their heads down to their toes.

it's to distract from the fundamental fact that it's just a bass

Mean, but funny!

Ace is all about that bass.

Re: Most controversial thread of nearly all-time

The received wisdom says that bass players aren't as conservative as guitar players, when it comes to gear.

And there does seem to be more of a market for unusual basses.

I'm not entirely sure what that market is, because I saw ~50 bands play last year (or more? I'd have to count) and probably 45 of their bassists played Fenders.

And a perennial topic on TalkBass is how all you need is a P.

But SOMEONE must be buying them, because they only seem to have proliferated in the past 25 years.

Re: Most controversial thread of nearly all-time

Guitars are much more over doing the same thing over and over again with little variance.

Haha.

Well, I'm not actually a mean person AT ALL -but a good joke is a good joke -and it fell into place.

and Bass Players on the forum: please to not take my offense to heart. I play sometimes.... and know the joys of a 4001/4003

Re: Most controversial thread of nearly all-time

Bass players were always more open minded and liked cutting edge gear.

Guitarists are often stuck in some retro/vintage mindset, and everything has to be a Strat, Tele or Les Paul, or similar 60 year old design.

Here’s one of the basses I built. You’ll never catch me playing a Jazz Bass. They are genetic and boring, although I like P basses.

I always played a Rickenbacker. These days I play a Parker guitar. I don’t want the same thing everyone else has.

Re: Most controversial thread of nearly all-time

It's hard to find a satin finished work horse guitar for cheap... You can find that for days with basses... And they stay in tune.

I agree with this. You'd think it would be an easy thing...I think companies want the cheap guitars to look all glossy and blingy.
