"most guys are using digital delays"

Re: "most guys are using digital delays"

I actually do prefer digital delay.

The salespuke still is a doofus. He needs to pay more attention in sales meetings...or read a social psych text.

Re: "most guys are using digital delays"

I've just had cheesecake for breakfast. Washed down with a bottle of red wine. Wife's away for the weekend so I naturally revert to the degenerate life style I lived before she rescued me. Now, what are we talking about ?

Re: "most guys are using digital delays"

I generally prefer digital myself.

It's easy to tone something down, but tough to un-mud it.

However...sometimes you just want analog goodness. Shouldn't have gotten rid of that old AD-9.

I still say DD-3 and an AD-9 - good to go whatever the situation.

Re: "most guys are using digital delays"

It's true. The guy at the Big Box said so. I asked "What is your cheapest analog delay (don't ask...). And he explained that right over here we have some digital delays and that that was what most guys are using...

Wow. You guys need to get over the analog thing.

I assume the "big box" as a GC???

It's funny...those guys have the biggest music stores around for most people in America and claim to be staffed with people "in the know" but I have yet to go into a GC that was staffed with a crap.

GC to me is a more interesting thing that analog vs digital delay to be honest!

Re: "most guys are using digital delays"

Why get over analog???

Thats the sound I like in a delay pedal so thats the pedal I use...

I'm with ya Bro.

And that goes for any modulation..chorus, phasing, etc. I like analog far better compared to the digital stuff I have ever owned, heard or used. That said, I am not terribly experienced with some of the "analog emulator" digital pedals out there these days so some of them may be pretty good/good enough for me, IDK.

Careful brother, the hate might start coming your way too!

Good to see ay though!

Ya know, the deal with the analog voiced digital pedals is simply this...they never nail it.

I mean, some of them are pretty close in some ways some are close in other ways but I have yet to find one that nails it and the tape voiced delay pedal's are even farther off IMHO...

Re: "most guys are using digital delays"

If I wanted a tape, I would use a tape delay.
Other than that, would just bring some echo of some kind that works....
No need to throw big money after an emulator....

And no digital delay ever sounded like a BBD based one either, nothing new there.

Lots of good digital delays, being just digital delays.
Have you even played one in person?
No I like to spit out rubbish in spades.....it is da wayz of der interwabzez...

Re: "most guys are using digital delays"

It is simple to understand, really. Look at the size of the Echoplex. By the time a sound bounces around in there a big sound has to come out. The El Cap has a much smaller enclosure. It stands to reason that sound waves bouncing around inside an enclosure that small can't accurately emulate the big box sound.

This isn't rocket science.

Maybe an El Cap needs to be rehoused in a big wooden box...that might help!

I regret that I've never had the opportunity to play a tape delay. That said, I would be unlikely to buy one just because of the size, cost and possible maintenance issues. I really didn't buy an El Cap believing it to be an accurate emulation of tape. I just wanted a delay with pristine (albeit digital) repeats and the El Cap happens to include a nice sounding reverb.

But, yes .... if the El Cap were in a large wooden box with the inside surfaces urethane coated to preserve high end detail and with two reels of magnetic tape liquid nailed to the bottom it would probably then more accurately emulate the sound of a tape delay. FWIW, I tried a a cardboard container with Scotch adhesive tape and it produced massive tone stick. There is no substitute for using high quality components for audio gear.

I certainly understand why people have their strong preferences for delay types. I just happen to like both analog and digital. My signal path is all analog except for the inclusion of the latter, and I am willing to live with any slight compromise it may induce.

Ya know, size, cost and up keep are the big issues people toss around when talking about tape delay units and why pedals, emulators or digital units are "better"...

I have never had to spend big bucks on work yet and even when the time comes if you spend a little cash now and then you're good for long periods of time...

As to the size, that is simply as issue of convenience and I am of the opinion that people that are too lazy to use lots of and or large gear because it is not convenient simply don't derserve the best tone available!

Also, FWIW, I paid less for my Echoplex units than many new digital units that are supposed to sound "like" tape...

Re: "most guys are using digital delays"

One thing about my emulator is it tends to preserve the clarity of the sound, where with a delay like the CC, your repeats darken and obscure. Thats likely at the cost of some texture and analog richness, but if your playing analog throughout the song, and with an already veiled tube amp sound, and you just want some quick clear trails, which is all I wanted from my emulator, then I'm good with it. I don't own another digital pedal, and i've got plenty.

I purposefully selected the word "possible" when describing repair issue because this is appears to be a commonly voiced complaint. I have absoltuely no experience with any of the tape units, although I have a Sony reel to reel recorder that I wish worked.

I do not agree that unwillingness to deal with the size of a unit has to be a function of laziness. For the last couple of years I have played mostly in my bedroom ..... so even though transporting a larger unit is not an issue space considerations are. To be honest, I am too lazy to work hard enough to buy a larger house.

In your opinion, how does the Fulltone unit compare to the Echoplex?

Re: "most guys are using digital delays"

In my opinion it doesn't...the TTE is just lacking compared to my plex.

As for the up keep costs I will say that it does depend on what trama the unit has been subjected to over the years...I used to have an EP-2 that sounded amazing but was a nightmare to keep working however had I known then what I know now I'd have likely had better results...if you own a tape echo you need to use a tape echo tech...those are the facts...

Re: "most guys are using digital delays"

One thing I like about digital delays is you can get exact delay times to match the time signature of a song.
