Most Overrated Modification

Re: Most Overrated Modification

Just about any mod that that puts a hole of any size in a classic or potentially future classic guitar. Probably the most overated is putting Grovers, Schallers, etc; on a new Fender or Gibson guitar with perfectly good tuners when you have to drill new screw holes to do it. I can say that because i've done it myself to every guitar I own, probably just like 90% or more of us have. Great tuners, sure, but not really necessary, and now i have these ugly exta holes in my headstocks.

TS808 mods...a few cents worth of parts that usually cost $50 or so for the mod...

Howdy neighbor...There's more to the mods than the 2 resistors and an opamp...You know this already or you should..You're paying for the guy's knowledge normally and not the parts...

^I actually need to pick up a set of locking, purely for string hassles. My high E sometimes slips out, and I HATE having too much string wound around the peg.

I never valued the idea of phase switches, or any other tricky mini-toggles all over the front of a guitar. Those seem like switches that get used on the first day you own the guitar, then never get touched again.

Hey I believe a series switch is THE MOST useful mod u can make on a single coil guitar. With a flick of a mini switch my strat becomes a les paul. The 5 - way turns into a Les Paul 3 way.

Re: Most Overrated Modification

adding built in effects to your guitar. some epiphones had it and some danelectros have it. veyr pointles in my opinion.

How do you tune it without the use of fine tuners?

He's not referring to a locking nut, he's referring to locking tuners such as Sperzels. I'm also guilty of this "indulgence" as all of my hardtails have Sperzels installed.

Ahh. I mis-read that one.

I went back and re-read that one and it makes sense now.

Re: Most Overrated Modification

I think for me i'd say it would be anything with tremolos. I realy don't liek tremolos at all, or floyds or anything like that. I don't ever use my tremolo on my strat, worthless to me, i'd rather practice my vibrato than use a metal stick to take my guitar out of tune. PLus its too metal for me. I know greats like Jimmy used it but its just not my thing.

Re: Most Overrated Modification

this isn't really a mod but it is over rated imo... the gold plated cords. Not just monsters but all of them. I have all gold plated monster and boss cords that cost mad $$$ and when i switch to my old fairly cheap cords i hear no difference at any volume or clean/distorted.

All i hear is people rave how it cleaned up the sound and how they had to adjust their settings because they do such a good job.

I have had them for a couple years and am not bad mouthing quality but for what little they seem to do i think they are extremely overated.

Re: Most Overrated Modification

its like a rapper who pays to remove all of his perfectly good teeth to get gold teeth. "bling bling" haha gotta have your "bling bling"

The difference comes down to how much cable you're using. From my guitar to my pedal board to my amp I run about 50ft of cable and I can tell a difference between Monster and cheap cable. On lengths of 20ft or less, you really can't tell.

Interesting... I'm committed to finishing my live setup with Monsters. I've got all (including my pedal board with about 5 of those 6 inchers at $20 a pop...ouch!) except the 21 footer I'm saving for now... The way I figure, you know you're getting the best in quality and construction as well as a lifetime guarantee. I can easily see how some are strongly against it. It adds up.

Re: Most Overrated Modification

My LiveWire cables (with the blue things on each end) Have a lifetime warranty and work great. Also cost about 1/4 of monsters.

Please...I'm so close to my complete collection - don't ruin my parade with these kind of posts!! :yell:

Re: Most Overrated Modification

Scalloping. Just refret with 6100s, man.

Floyds are a cost/benefit thing to me. If you really need one, and you're really going to play the thing, I don't care if you dump one on your guitar. Jimmy Thackery has a 62 strat that has a floyd set into bowling ball material(!), but as he says, he doesn't retune all night. And he PLAYS that thing.

i have 1 10' monster goin to my pedal board that consists of 9 boss gold plated patch cords then out with another 10' monster... so it's not a lack of cords or cheap gear all boss pedals except for my vox wah.
