Moving on from Dimarzio and EMG??

From my Perspective, you search for an Unachievable combination.
Nice Mids, Tightness, Lot's of Beef.
Choose 2 of the 3. You can't have all of it. The reason is the Beef. The Beef comes with a Prize!
The BK Miracle Man is a very good example. I had it for some time and I loved the Lows, the Tightness, The response. Lovely. But, Where the Tightness begins, ends the the Lower Mids, which adds to the smoothness.
Blaze Custom for instance, was made with more mids, and therefore lacks tightness.
The FS will cover lots of bases, and if you Use the right amp, it will fill your needs. You might add a 10 band EQ in the mix for some extra beef. But the Response, clarity, and smooth Character stays.

Another Option would be BK Painkiller. Except being not the tightest, the clarity, mids and response is great.

Custom 8 is a good option, but get ready to have a slightly pingy character on a Basswood guitar.

Funny Enough, The Distortion 7 might be cool! It is producing very nice Lows, it is clear and cuts though like butter.

These are the ones I think of.

Re: Moving on from Dimarzio and EMG??

LOL cheers Daemon. Basswood owners are important for this. I know I can't have everything... I'm committing to the Invader, and I'll work with it. I'm going to have out of phase, coil taps, PRS rotary switching, to mitigate a lot of the power. I've come to the conclusion that I need gain at the front end for my rhythm sounds; all my best sounds come from a hot "midheavy with a midcut" amp with a pedal in front, with strong gain from the guitar. Like a Cat in front of a JCM800 type thing.

I don't overly bright or pingy sounds. I dumped an entire setup years ago because the pick noise was annoying me. Easier to just work with a warmer sound, as long as it has enough definition to not be a slushfest.

:friday: Good Choice. Hope you get what you want :)

Me too. The wife is going to be pissed if I have a second crack at it.

Re: Moving on from Dimarzio and EMG??

Waiting waiting... rotary switches and pickups coming from Ebay over the next couple weeks.

Re: Moving on from Dimarzio and EMG??

Well damn... I went and glued aluminium to the inside cavity of my humble ibanez (WOOT SHINY) but none of the noise problems disappeared. It seems that my current guitar noise is related to RUBBISH pots (gosh I'm glad to dump these) or pickups. :( I'm a sad panda. Pickups should be here within the week though.

Re: Moving on from Dimarzio and EMG??

Was having a listen to some clips; the JC120 neck clean is exactly Ride the Lightning with the neck Invader. LOL So much for getting away from the Ride the Lightning sound.

Synyster Gates of A7x does a good job with Invaders as well. Don't try to pigeonhole a pup because it was used on a particular album or person. The rig is infinitely more important.

Yeah I'm not sure there is enough muscle with anything except the super brutal pickups. I'm guessing that the Invader is basically a TZ with a bit of growl to it, rather than the sledgehammer thunk thunk?

The Invader is a sledgehammer, make no bones about it. You have one oversized ceramic mag and two smaller booster mags as well. The Invader has an ample supply of bass and a lot of tweakability with the 12 large poles.

Have you considered an X2N? It's not as hot as an Invader but it is pretty hot and will do well in any double cut guitar.

Re: Moving on from Dimarzio and EMG??

I don't like the X2N sound. Never been a Chuck Shuldiner fan, but it's an entirely different kettle of fish as far as tone goes. My sonic birthplace is Metallica and Slayer's glory days - scoopy scoopy mahogany as opposed to the more full alder sound of "yankee metal" of Vai, Anthrax and Death. I think the alder is good, but only combined with a scoopy sound.

I'm not sure I could physically handle a 7 string mahogany guitar though after roadtesting the mahogany Ibanez RG. HEAVY.

Re: Moving on from Dimarzio and EMG??

I don't know how you could NOT be a fan of Schuldner. That's like saying Derek Roddy sucks at teh drumz.

Nile's sound is kinda suckish if you ask me.

Bill Steer's sound on Necroticism FTW.

Re: Moving on from Dimarzio and EMG??

Death's sound was picked up by the Swedish melodic death metal scene like Arch Enemy or in Flames etc, and I really don't like it. There is a mid kick to the sound which, while buttery, isn't my cup of joe. I didn't really start listening to death metal until Chuck had probably passed away.

Nile has the best tone in metal right now... best composition, best everything. They've got an impossibly heavy sound that they manage to keep clear and audible. Great stuff. Either way, I think the difference is purely taste. :)

I haven't installed the puppies yet. Giving them to a tech to do. ;)

Re: Moving on from Dimarzio and EMG??

Hopefully my mystery bump will get some support.

How do you install the Invaders? Do they need to be 1/8-1/16th of an inch from the top of plastic, or from the top of epic huge hex bolts??? It's a big difference with these puppies.

It's going to vary based on the tone you want. The closer the pup the louder and focused the sound. The further the softer and more open the sound.

Re: Moving on from Dimarzio and EMG??

Don't forget Strig-Pull. Sustain and Intonation are very well influenced by the String-Pull, which is pretty strong with the Invader. it also creates many False Harmonics when you adjust it too close to the strings (like every other passive PU). It even may add a bit of Fizz on the Attack phase of your tone, since the false Harmonics add a brittle top frequency, with your pick attack, can be disturbing.

Holy thread resurrection, Batman!

I've got some alligator clip test wires from Ebay, I'm going to commence experimentation on my wiring diagram. Hurrah!

Re: Moving on from Dimarzio and EMG??

Damn its been six months. Lost motivation to wire up the Invaders (the guitar is still open on my desk in front of me waiting waiting...) I've been enjoying a nylon string acoustic tuned DADGAD for the past few months. Finally getting some sounds and vibes out of it. Good tuning for a metalhead with a flair for diminished EVERYTHING to get himself into some major chord sounding Smashing Pumpkins sounds :)

Re: Moving on from Dimarzio and EMG??

Damn... how can you resist? Thats a bit like having a chick sitting waiting to play doctor with you...

If it was me I would go nuts with the soldering iron just so that i could hear it then tweak it some more...
