Music Man JP BFR model, impressions

I was in GC looking for a new 1x12 combo and asked the floor guy to grab me an Ibanez or a Music Man to try out amps, nothing in particular. He brought me over a Music Man JP BFR. I don't believe it was the JPX, actually it wasn't. There was no 5 way switch and this one had a 3 way and mini 3 way for piezo/magnetics.

Overall, a slick guitar. The neck was nice and I really dug that it was a set neck, I think set necks like that have much better fret access. Then again, neck heels vary from company to company. PRS is another story.

It hung pretty well on the strap and my arms felt really comfortable too. After 20 minutes of exploring it I was feeling right at home and ripping away. The pickups sounded great and the Dimarzio neck pickup was pretty versatile, I must say. The bridge was tuned for heavey rock/metal, but had a pleasant tone and was pretty articulate. Good singing mid range.

I left the store wanting that axe more than the amp I was trying out. I am really considering a JP model for the next purchase or a custom build with a 25.5 set neck design. The bolt on neck thing just isn't playing out for me as much as it used to. We'll see! Anyone else tried out one of these axes, what did you think? I would just be hesitant in buying one because I feel like everyone would look at me and expect me to play like John. That's the curse of a sig guitar though.

I'm pretty sure the John Petrucci BFR is a bolt-on. EBMM do not make set-necks.

damn, I am a tool. It was so slick I could have sworn it was a sculpted set neck joint. They really know how to do a bolt on design right then.

The regular JP6 is my main guitar. Easy to play and built like a tank. I didn't like the stock dimarzios (mine is 8 years old so it had different pups in it then) so I replaced them with a Screamn Demon/Jazz.

Very underrated guitars.

No worries man. They do really have a mastery of the bolt-on design. I own two EBMM guitars - a Silhouette and a Steve Morse signature - and they're the two most solid-feeling guitars I've ever owned. That 5-bolt joint is absolutely rock-solid rigid. The whole guitar feels like one piece of wood.

I think my next purchase may be an EBMM. Thing rocked my socks. I need to move some gear! lol

I think they're roughly 3k? I would shoot for one used. I have no problem paying over 2k for an axe as long as it truely fits me and inspires me

Musicman guitars are great. I have a Luke that I'll be keeping till the end.

There is a difference between the BFR (Ball Family Reserve) models and the regular models though. The BFRs have a mahogany tone block in the center of the body and have maple tops and alder or ash wings. That along with a bit more attention to detail make for some exceptional, lively and beautiful guitars. The price difference is what steered me towards the standard model instead of the BFR Luke. The BFRs are pricey but certainly worth it if you are looking for a keeper and can afford it.
