I'd go with an OD pedal like an 808 clone into an HM2 from Boss or Pharaoh from Black Arts depending on song. I'd do a line 6 DL4 into the preamp and maybe some sort of doubler pedal. No chorus or any of that; just straight aggression.

IF i played in a Metal band . . . i would do something like this :
BC Rich Mockingbird Pro X (w. Duncan Black Outs) + Mockingbird Pro (w. TV Jones Power'Trons) --->Parachute wah --->Catalinbread V8 Fuzz Tone Engine --->Maxon OD820 --->Catalinbread Super Chili Picoso --->Boss RE-20 ...into (((stereo)))) 5150 + first gen 100W Krankenstein in 4X12 Over Size cab with Emi Swamp Thangs

A good highgain amp would be #1, of course.
But if you wanted something that did it all.....this.
Substitute the blue for the Uberschall, if necessary. For metal, graphic EQ's are good to have, whether they're in front or in the FX loop.

I'd probably try to have:
1.) A great hot-rod Marshall-ish pedal.
2.) A higher-gain, more modern-sounding pedal, probably one of the newer ones that I haven't tried yet.
3.) Wah.
4.) Noise gate.
6.) Graphic EQ pedal.
7.) Chorus.
8.) Tuner.

The best for many, many people is guitar>tubescreamer clone (lots of people like the Maxon OD808)>amp. A noise gate can be thrown in if your amp is a tad noisy.
If you are playing lead as well, delay is cool sometimes, and wah if you are confident that you want sound like a hack using it.
This is all assuming that your amp has good reverb. If it doesn't, a reverb pedal is something I would consider.

1. Ibanez tube screamer -- a must for boast, tone coloration
2. Mxr superbadass distortion -- not only great distortion but has three very tweakable EQ knobs
3. Mxr carbon copy -- can be used for a reverb esque sound, thickening (like a virtual double track, which helps if you are the only guitarist), and has a tasteful modulation button
4. Any good volume pedal -- helps with dynamics; personally, I hate noise gates, as they suck your sound
5. Snark pedal tuner -- great for the price, accurate and built like a tank
With these you can cover a lot of ground.
Modulation like flange, phase, chorus are nice later editions. I like mxr for them, as I prefer analog but digital stuff like tc electronics is quite good, too.

How does your tc electronics corona delay sound? Do you feel you get a warm feel from it?

Who makes a Doubler stompbox, easily found on the used market? I checked into the MXR rack mount offering when I saw the Guitar World interview w Dimebag's tech Grady Champion who said Dime ALWAYS had it set to On, but I don't want to do rack mount and I was not impressed with the YouTube examples of the MXR I found on YouTube (granted the few I found were not good audio).

You can probably do a Carbon Copy like rumy22 or pretty much any delay pedal, especially one with two outs. make the delay time very, very small and the modulation to nothing. A tight slapback effect or tighter. if You can stereo out, send to another amp.
I haven't found a chorus where I liked the effect, but those are supposed to be the real way to do it.

as long as you have a high gain amp you really don't need much of anything. I used nothing but a korg pitchblack and a boss ge7 for years until i added a kirk hammett wah. the wah became too much of a bother and only lasted one tour. i always try to have a distortion pedal on hand in case i needed to use another amp without enough gain for whatever reason.

I wah pedal and EQ pedal are way up there IMO.
I also "made" (didn't take any thought to be honest) a stupid-simple SPDT kill switch pedal that is extremely useful. Easier than turning your volume all the way down, especially if you have it preset at say, ~7 or 6 for rhythm. No battery, no lights; just two jacks, a standard Dunlop SPDT switch I cannibalized, three shielded wires, and an electrical outlet box.

Let the fads come and go as they may; if you go back to the early 90's, wah was practically dead before it exploded again. Right now, it's pretty heavily saturated and there's a lot of backlash. I think there's a lot to be said for playing what you want to play, for your own reasons.
