Mustang Switches and Wiring Help

Hey all!

I was wondering if anyone had any input on this? Can't seem to find a good answer anywhere.

I want to put a P Rails in the bridge and either a Vintage or Cool Rails in the neck of my Jag-Stang. I want to install a 3-way "LP style" switch for standard pickup switching but wanted to repurpose the slider switches to be split/series/parallel on the neck and single/humbucker/P90 for the bridge. All of the wiring diagrams I can find are for 6 lug switches. The Jag-Stang/Mustang switches are 8 lug on-on-on (as far as I know. The StewMac ones are on-on-on at least. I'll have to pull the pickguard and see what the stock ones are).

Is it possible to do what I'm looking to do with these switches or will I need to get a whole new pickguard with the switches omitted and extra holes added at the bottom for mini toggles?

They are 2P/3T on/on/on switches. Look up how those work, and you should be able to see if you can get what you want from them.

Well, if you solder middle lugs together either side, you get standard 6 lug switch used in those diagrams. However 8 lug version in Mustang can do more, and is that way better, so I definitely urge you to delve in and figure ou tif you can improve from the diagram.

go with the cool rail, the vintage rail is so bad I'd honestly rather put a fridge magnet or a squier bullet series pickup in a guitar. It's way too low output. 2k / 1H area. I had one with a JB and a cool rail in the neck and positions 2, 3 and 4 with the pickup wired normally. No autosplits or any mods it went from a good rock or metal tone to .... clean. I adjusted my height and everything to compensate for it but either way it went out of the project.

when in doubt to keep the original switch what I do is get out the multimeter and try for continuity to tell me everything the switch does. Ideally you'd want an on/on/on to do series/split/parallel out of the P-rail.

if you've never used a multimeter before this is one of the better examples I've seen online. Since it's a Fender there should be a diagram on their service manual side of the site. This is the video on multimeters. It starts off on cables which is in this case a great place to start.

The Vintage Rails is a fine pickup on its own or with other Vintage Rails. The issue is combining it with other pickups. If you don't mind a volume imbalance, you can use it as sort of a built-in boost.
