muting question

I was reading a lesson by Paul Gilbert and he taught about muting strings by touching the other side of the string you pick with the tip of the pick. ive been working on this as for me, it is very hard not to pick the string on the "muting stroke".
But I got to thinking.. How is this beneficial versus plain ole muting the fretting hand or palm?? obviously, its a lesson in pick control..
Do you guys do this??

Re: muting question

i cant really think of anything besides the sound of the strings vibrating on the pick might give some interesting tones

do you notice anything different, because it just sounds like a pick control lesson to me

Re: muting question

the lesson was to mute for a good staccato. The only difference tonally is if I dont deaden it correctly, it'll buzz against the pick.. can be a neat effect, but not what he is teaching. Again, same result to me as releasing grip or palm muting.. Just takes more pick finesse.
