MX412 Speaker Swap

So my brother has a Marshall MX412A laying around that he never used, so he figured he'd let me mod it. I was a bit nervous until I realized that a cabinet is no more complicated than 4 speaker cones and some wire. The current speakers are based off of Vintage 30s, but I think they are a bit darker and more bass heavy.

What speakers could I replace them with that would get it closer to a 1960A? I'm not trying to replicate a 1960A, that's just a starting point. I'd rather keep it cheap too if possible, the frame is cracked on the bottom so it won't be going to any gigs.

Also, two more things, I'd like to experiment with mixing speakers. The last bit is more of a safety concern, but do you have to drain cabs like you do with amps?

Re: MX412 Speaker Swap

You'll likely spend more $ monkeying with that thing then you would on a good used mesa 412.

If you insist though,,,,,,,get a pair of t75 or hot 100s and mix with the current speakers in an x-pattern if it's a slant cab,,,,,or if the cab is straight then put the better speakers on top and the stock speakers on bottom.
This will keep you in the sub $200 range.
No speaker draining required.

Thanks. Is their anything else to mod in a cab? All I can think of is the speakers and the housing having an effect on tone.

Re: MX412 Speaker Swap

Don't waste your time, money or energy. Blow those speakers up while you save up for a real cab.
