My Axe Is Better Than Yours...

Re: My Axe Is Better Than Yours...

I'm glad the OP likes his guitar, but I'm not convinced I should swap.

Different beasts really. If you love the Jackson, you might very well dislike my Strat. In which case, you should keep yours, and I'll hang on to this one. Everyone wins!

Cheers........................................ wahwah

Re: My Axe Is Better Than Yours...

yeah i disagree with the fundamental basis of this thread

that guitar was something i would wanna play before i learned everything that i know now about guitars. For the tones i go for, i could find a much better-suited instrument for a way lower price than anything produced by Jackson.

Slim strat-shaped body? Hot pickups that completely mask the guitar's natural tone? Floyd Rose? Pass pass pass pass pass

I find myself agreeing with you a lot lately.....must be the box of crack you bought

+1 in my book, not the features or tone I go for...

Re: My Axe Is Better Than Yours...

There's plenty of tone in a Soloist. It's just not the kind of tone you get in a Les Paul, is all. I've never played anything that nails classic metal crunch the way a USA Soloist does. So until we standardize some sort of international uniform tone unit to quantify these things, it's probably best not to talk about this or that design lacking tone. Every guitar has tone; don't lose sight of how qualitative it all is.

Lets put it this way then- it's a tone that inherently has little to offer other than a very "clean" (sterile) non colored platform for high gain pickups & amplifiers. It's not an issue with jackson in particular but ANY maple neck through/alder bodied guitar (carvin, some ESps, alot of BC Riches, etc) Low output pickups sound weak, tinny, and lifeless in them comparitively- EVEN in a great specimen with plenty of sustain and overtones (of which I've had two, one MIJ, one MIA). Metal guys pick them because they can go gain, effects, & output crazy without as much mud or a lack of clarity. And not to mention they play might speedily.

As for "classic" metal- to me thats the sound of strats with dimarzios (or singles) & Gibsons with T-tops or DiMarzios. If your definition of "classic metal" starts at Anthrax, MOP era Kirk, or Stryper, then we are definitely not on the same wave length ;)

So your point is that it's a different kind of guitar for a different kind of sound. Hmm. Sounds kinda familiar. Except I have to disagree with anyone who thinks a Soloist comes with crazy high-output pickups. The bridge is usually a JB, and the neck in an H-H Soloist is a '59 (I put an A2 in mine). Not Seths, but not crazy.

To me, classic metal is anything 1990 or older. Before Nirvana broke, before nu-metal sludge became the norm for heavy guitar tone, when bands like the big four were still keeping the hair-metal weenies at bay. The relatively raw, unprocessed sound of 80's thrash bands is my gold standard for metal tone. And guess what? A good Jackson with Duncans nails it.

At 16+K, there are those that would argue that a JB is a "crazy high-output pickup." Most local players I know feel that way. The 'crazy' aspect further being accentuated by the fact that JB's are so picky about the woods they sound good in (that qualifies as eccentric behavior). Are you implying that the JB is a medium output, middle-of-the-road, kind of understated PU?

+1 give me a les paul with 59's...yum

Re: My Axe Is Better Than Yours...

By metal standards, yes. When I first tried a JB, in the bridge of a Soloist, I thought it sounded weak and mild-mannered. I was used to DiMarzio Evolutions and EMG 81's. Eventually I came around to appreciating the JB and understanding why Jackson puts them in those guitars. It's a guitar where the JB happens to work -- not for everything, but for some things. It's a specialist. Instead of being great for a lot of things like a Les Paul is, it's really meant to excel at hard rock and metal. The fact that it's not very good at vintage blues and classic rock doesn't make it a bad guitar; it just makes it not the best tool for those jobs. (And don't forget the '59 in the neck! I love my '59A2.)

Re: My Axe Is Better Than Yours...

I always thought the JB sounded like it was asleep.

I have Distortions in everything. Jazz in the neck in everything.

See, blueman335? The JB is a mild PAF-type pickup, after all! Poor H8Red442 here uses them for his easy-listening studio sessions -- and he uses your favorite neck pickup in the whole wide world! :nana:
