My blind hate of strats

Re: My blind hate of strats

The lifetime of a guitarist often consists of the gradual transition from humbuckers to single coils. You just don't realize it till you've been playing 20+ years. Your ear seeks purity more and more.

But that's not to say humbuckers can't be enjoyed for a lifetime too. However, over time, most people start wanting to hear purer sounding humbuckers with lower output and more dynamic range.

Is that because as time goes on grandpa can only hear more trebley frequencies with any clarity? :D (I know this is actually the opposite of what happens with hearing loss with age)

Actually, I kinda understand what you are saying. As I play more I tend to use less gain and have ditched higher output pickups for slightly lower output pups. But to say that everyone, as their tastes refine, will gravitate towards singlecoils is a painting a picture with a broad, broad brush. Singlecoils just sound thin and too "ice-picky" to me. And until my hearing fails to recognize such high frequencies with any efficiency, I don't believe I would entertain the idea of buying a guitar equipped with them. And in that event, my refined tastes would not be the culpret, but rather my failing hearing that prompted me to deem the pickups tolerable for my tastes. Hell, my dad who is 55 and has been playing for years ditched his singlecoil bridge pickup in his strat for a lil '59 because the stocker was too thin sounding. And a lot of his idols use singles.

However, tastes do change and I might be surprised with my future decisions. But I like my guitars to be able to have some chunk, which I haven't been able to find in a singlecoil equipped guitar.

But its all subjective. Some people love them and some people hate them. And that is the case with any piece of musical gear. Its all subjective. Nothing wrong with liking anything. Some things just aren't for me.

Re: My blind hate of strats

you know, I've hated strats based on the totally wrong guitars. I've played a few squiers and a few MIMs and i had decided that I hated strats and the way the sound. This was wrong. I played an MIJ through a blues junior and I realized that they aren't bad guitars recieved.

owww

I just cannot get myself to take Cream123 seriously... He likes Duos, Jazz and Cobain... Can it get any worse?

:smack:

btw, this doesn't mean that I will buy one. Cause I won't but they're neat guitars none the less. Although I don't think they deserve the fame they recieved.

There's about a gazillon guitar players that will disagree with you.

Re: My blind hate of strats

Actually, I've heard the single-coil transition argument before, but I know several guitarists (myself included) who moved TO humbuckers.

Joe, you left out EC, EJ & YJM.

Re: My blind hate of strats

ok, so you played low end stuff & didn't like it, then you played a kind of mid-rangey one and did

so... you should prolly play a MIA, like a 60th anniversary, see how you like that

I'd hate les pauls if all i ever played was epiphone alder/mahogany/laminate POS's

Re: My blind hate of strats

i like strats just fine. i dont understand how their price tags can get so high for a streamlined design. bolt on the neck and there you go. I think the only reasonably priced strats are the standards that come for like 500

Yes, I think there's a lot to that. I find myself heading down that road as well.

I'm pretty sure I did actually, come to think of it. It was a good guitar, build quality wise. I just didn't like the sound.

Les Pauls, I've played a few that I've liked. The only one I've played that I like enough to buy (sound wise) was the BFG.

dude, c'mon

just cause a car is easily assembled doesn't mean it's cheaply made

i think a grand for a MIA strat is completely reasonable.

as far as getting older & pickups & tone & all that, i can kinda relate

at first i wanted high output, lots of bass, almost no mids, cranked the gain all the time

now, for most stuff i don't use much gain. My basic tones just have some OD to them, the only time i go with a lot of gain is for like solos & stuff like that

and my taste in distortion has gone from like mesa/new marshall buzzy crap to more vintage tones, even my "heavy" tone is more thick than anything else, the traynor gives me a big muff type tone when i crank the bejesus out of it

as far as SC vs humbuckers, i still like both, but high output is just... gross sounding

Yeah...kind of.

I went through a handfull of nice high-end Strats until I wrapped my hand around a MIM and had one of those epiphanies in regards to what I had wanted all those years.

I still own some of them. I have a 73' and a first year Clapton. But when I need a "Strat" I grab the MIM with Lace Holy Grails.

If anything, I think it's a misnomer to play anything a small number of times and just write it off. I couldn't stand the way the Les Paul bridges were angled when i was younger. Now I own three of them. Hollowbodies? Too bulky! Now I've owned one since December and played it enough to seriously be concerned about fret wear!

Re: My blind hate of strats

I changed my opinion about stock strats when I was able to get a bone stock strat with the right gear to sound HEAVY and BALLSY, blew my mind, I never thought I could get a metal tone out of one!!!

Re: My blind hate of strats

Stephen, you left out RB and UJR.
RB .... Richie Blackmore ???? when did he go bucker??? Does Uli have any buckered strats or its just his seven-string, I just realized that in scoprs he did play single coils .....
