My 'Cornchopper' build

Re: My 'Cornchopper' build

If you aren't careful, you might end up with a gem like this:

If I that thing spent a weekend at my house, it would have a pickguard cut from a Tennessee liscense plate, then it'd truly be worthy of the name "Cornchopper". Either that or I'd put a nickel cover over the neck and add +3 points to the "Classy" score. But it's your guitar, if you improve on it, let us know, if you inadvertently make it worse, we'll try to help.

Classy is cool but most guitars that roll off the line today are "classy" and remain that way until the people either sell them or put them away to collect dust. I'm fascinated by guitars that have been loved. I don't know how I'll ever wear the finish off my Squier's Lacquer... (Maybe a body swap later for something more resonant-soft). A Floyd completely changes the guitar; though I've always loved Eddie and the way he hacked his guitars. That being said, I don't know if that's the direction I want to go. But it's tempting. Also, on the topic of hacking, his Explorer had seen better days...

PS. Do many people leave guitars at your place for the weekend then? :laugh2:

Seriously though, your tele looks amazing. I love it.

Nice build.
Modding Squiers is a hobby of mine, so I can really appreciate what you've done there. ;)

Oh no, that Tele isn't mine, it's a model made by some boutique builder. I forget what the brand is called but I think the guitar is called "Workhorse T-style" or something like that. The idea is its supposed to have started out as an early Tele that the owner modded everytime a new mod got discovered. I had a project that ended up similar (instead of a Floyd it had a Tune-o-matic and it was painted differently) but it's a pretty cool road to take a guitar down.

It started out as a MIM Blonde Telecaster I removed the pickguard and replaced the neck pickup with a nickel covered A4 59 and the bridge with a double cream A4 Custom that I made from hybridizing two zebra Customs. The bridge was a Tune-o-matic, I replaced the Tele neck with a Strat neck, painted it black and white dazzle camoflauge, carved the rib and arm cuts, and finally I put the control plate on upside down. The thing looked darn cool, but I sold it one day because some guy offered me twice it's value as an impulse buy.

And yes, people have been known to leave guitars at my house for the weekend on occasion. :D

Re: My 'Cornchopper' build

Hey all.

Been a very long time since I’ve updated this post. I haven’t been hugely active here in the SD forums but I’ve been totally changing the direction of this project. In the last year I’ve decided to build my very first body, and continue along a different thought path than what the last iteration included.

I’m going to post more later of the entire process, but I wanted to quickly post some pics of what I’m doing now:

It’s a Ghanaian Mahogany body, that I bought as a slab and had it planted down to thickness, and luckily for me, my local specialty wood store has an awesome selection of bookmatched tops-

So I built this:

I’m still in the oiling stages (I’m using Tung Oil) and I’m aiming to do another 6 coats this week. Maybe plug it in on Sunday!

I *was* gonna refer you to some John Deere colormatch spraypaint.... but that color you have is just too awesome to mess with

Thanks for the replies guys, here’s a better picture linked to this forum:

It’s changed a lot since I’ve stopped using the Squier parts!

Re: My 'Cornchopper' build

Fun read. It’s kind of like my Strat, it started as a Deluxe Plus, then little by little it became a different guitar entirely. Enough so that original Deluxe Plus is all reassembled and the new guitar exists by itself.

That latest body is gorgeous.

Re: My 'Cornchopper' build

Alright, a few more days and a few more updates.

I did two more coats of Tung oil in the last couple days and I'm very happy with the finish. Its thin enough to seem very natural and "cozy". It's thick enough that I've grown very fond of the sheen.

Yesterday/today in between coats I worked on the neck screw holes. This neck has been passed around a bit and at one point bass neck screws were used and the regular screws I have are a deal smaller than that, so I had to get creative.

I started by cutting some square dowels off of a piece of maple I had lying around.

I inserted each dowel into my drill chuck, and set up my dremel press like a spindle sander:

The results were good:

Carefully with some glue and some light taps with my rubber mallet and a small twist, I put them in the desired holes:

Moving along, I worked on the neck plate I was going to use. I didn't really want a fender neck plate but it's what I have in my things.

After running it through my table jig saw with a metal blade, I spent some time dulling the edge so that it was comfy to the touch:

And today I cut the dowels flush, sanded the base of the neck so it was nice and flush, and re-drilled the holes.

Bolted it up and everything lines up great with my prospective bridge placement!

Laid out my parts more intentionally, I found I'll need to change my volume pot for a 500k one. The one I have is only 250k and I don't think I'll prefer the sound of my Slash Alnico 2's with 250k.

A polish of the body and a few more odds and ends and I might actually finish this thing!

Re: My 'Cornchopper' build

And it’s done!

Very excited and happy with this. It’s been a lot of effort but it is finally complete!
