Two points...

1. Bruce needs to get you an Aurora! Making you play a DR when all the other kids have new toys! Shame on him! ahaha!

2. As big as I am, after back and shoulder surgeries, I'm liking them small and portable as well brother Lew! If it can't sound good with one speaker, I'm not interested. I've got this 2x12 bluesbreaker sized cab I had built but, it's just too much most of the time. It'll never leave my music room. But, I've got the Tweed Pro 1x15 and the Franklin 1x12 and they are my true grab and go amps.

Sounds like you guys had fun last night.

We did! Wish you were there with one of your amp creations Scott. We gotta get together some day and do some pickin'. :)

It's amazing to me how much cleaner and louder a 4 x 10 version of an amp might be compared to a 2 x 12 version of the same amp.

Yeah, I recently discovered this for myself!

The studio I do some work for has a 2x12 Fender Hot Rod Deville combo that I've played around with a few times. I dunno if it's me, or the way I use amps etc, but I just couldn't get a tone out of the amp that i was satisfied with.

Anyways, my band played at The Cavern Club in Liverpool a few weeks ago and because of the distance I live from there, I couldn't take my amp but arranged with the club to use 1 of theirs. I get there and it's a 4x10 Fender Hot Rod Deville, so obviously knowing how I'm not a fan of the 2x12 version, I wasn't expecting alot myself!

I plugged my Gibson LP into my pedaboard and then into the amp and imo it sounded a hell of a lot better than the 2x12 version! It was louder overall (more speakers I'd assume) and sounded more open and clearer.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but just wanted to agree with Lew and it ended up being a longer reply than I thought :D

Re: My Deluxe Reverb Amp was NOT enough last night...

I've been playing jeremy's amp through my tweed pro with the 15" JBL D130F in it. Then I played it through the cab with the two Mojo G12H30's in it. Way louder. There's also that efficiency thing going for the ceramic magnets.

Yeah, that 30 watter sounded killer at the Dallas Show. Man, decisions, decisions. At least I have time to decide, maybe. Depends on the dr. verdict on my Marshall. It went down Friday night at practice. A smell, bright orange tubes, then off. No power, nothing. The mains fuse went so hopefully that stopped any major damage but I fear for the transformers.

How big was the room?

OUCH!:yell:

Yep. It's true. For live gigging in a big room with a loud band 18 watts doesn't cut it. Or 22 watts either. It's why I bring two 18 watters or two 22 watters if I have any control over the scene.

Should have just followed my instincts and brought my Matchless Chieftan.

Teddy Roosevelt said it best, "Play softly, but always carry an amp that can obliterate everybody else....should the need arise."

Or something like that!

Re: My Deluxe Reverb Amp was NOT enough last night...

This is way I mike through the PA, when the amp is too low powered because the other guitar players are too loud!

e.g., Folding chair + Mike stand + Gooseneck + Shure 57

PS: For those who have heard me play, can you believe that anyone would play at less volume?

Scott_FD, Jeff Seal, Jeff, Jake - Any Comments ???

I was thinking the along the same lines. The key to gigging with a under powered amp is You have to get it off the floor! Other wise your sound just gets sucked into everybody's pants cuffs. My Princeton can hold it's own with a Vibrolux as long as it is up on a bar stool. I also set my vocal mic. within proximity of the amp. So when I take a solo, I just step aside and let the amp bleed into the P.A.:) But I know how impromptu blues jams work. Last one I did, I got there late and had no place to put my PR but the floor!:blackeye: Some guy with a Blues Jr. snagged the last bar stool. I got totally blown out.:smack:

I like a certain amount of stage volume though. Playing a little amp miked through the PA when the bass player is pumping away through a loud rig with a loud drummer just doesn't "feel" right. Not enough air is moving. I love playing through two DR's...this time I only had one. Lew

Hey Lew, Jack Sherman... told me over the next few days that he loved your tone and your broken nut Telecaster cut like a silky razor.
Yes, Jack wants one of the 32 watt Aurora amps too but he thinks maybe he'd like it in a head bottom set up... or at least with the new 2x12 combo cab. Funny, I really thought that head and bottom thing was passe`.

By the way, I could hardly hear myself either after a bit and was so tired at the end of the night that I was about to drop.
Even though we all swore to keep the volumes down and amps in the low 20-30 watt range, after the first 45 mins everyone discovered that all the players could play and they got way too excited... playing louder and louder... typical.
Plus that SVT-5 PRO 1000 watt bass amp and bottom of Randy's didn't help.
That's the first time in a long time (maybe ever) I've played with a bass player who had the gear to drive most of the guitar players off the stage with brute force, volume and power.

Next, is the new show Steve and I are trying to get together is with Albert Lee, who probably is going to be endorsing the Aurora Project.
Albert wants to do it as a guitar seminar too, with an hour or two of playing after. This will be later in the fall.
That show, the little jam sessions we want to keep doing and the guys from Vintage Guitar and Guitar Player magazine, who keep calling here and bugging me about an amp to write about... (they were both at Dallas and in our booth too) ought to keep us busy.:smack:

Re: My Deluxe Reverb Amp was NOT enough last night...

The louder the other guitar player plays the lower I play. If they are too unprofessional or oblivious and don't get the hint, I put my guitar down, shut off my amp and just sit down.

I will never battle another person on stage for volume or anything else, I have had too many years of that nonsense.

When I play rhythm I bring my volume down just enough to be felt and maybe not even heard depending on how may people are on stage. I play a little simpler and in the pocket with more volume and in a more percussive way if the drummer is rhythmically challenged.

I feel there are rules and a respect thing that a lot of musicians forget about or do not even know exists.

I always said you can play with 10 guitar players on stage if each one knows what they are doing. If they could have so many Violins, violas, cellos and basses in a symphony orchestra why can't guitar players play under control and with discpline...............99.99% can't.

Don't get me started on drummers.......:-0

Hey Bruce! Good to see you here.

I hadn't played my '54 Tele in a while and brought it at the last minute instead of one of my Strats. I should have checked it first though cuz something had happened to the nut and the high E and B were buzzing against the first fret like crazy. Charlie was on the case though and handed me a piece of paper towel to stick in the nut slot for the high E and B and that rasied them enough to do the gig. Once we started jamming I forgot all about it. It's fine now...fixed it the next day.

What did you think of Sherrie Scott? Isn't she an amazingly great singer?

We've been playing together for a while now.

As for my tone, no one seemed to think I wasn't loud enough but me! AJ called the next day to rave about it so there you go... :)

So: how about following Scott_F's advice and furnishing me with an Aurora??? Maybe a two EL-34 or four EL-84 one???

Please??? Pretty please???

I'll even pay you for it! :laugh2:

So I wonder how many decibels that got up to. Do you guys wear earplugs or what?

Nope...I do have some earplugs but I didn't anticipate needing them.

Wasn't THAT loud...it's just that my DR only puts out about 22 watts and the other guys were all playing through louder amps. Jack was playing through TWO amps. If I'd known I'd have brought two of my DR's...not just one. Or my Vibrolux Reverb.
