My first attempt.

I'm not even sure I've got it right yet.

I had all sorts of trouble converting the MIDI backing track to MP3.

Not sure if I've got the Bit rate right either.

It's a bit of a track (2.45 mins) around the Gary Moore, 'Still Got the Blues', thing.

It's pretty sloppy playing in regards timing and phrasing, but it's a 'first take' no rehearsal sort of thing.

When I get the time I'll make a better job of it.

However, I'd like a little feedback if possible (said Jimmi). Good or bad - what do you think?

Very cool smooth playing Lee. This is way more difficult than it seems. Making single notes sound good is an art. Great playing and nice tone.

You seem to be using the neck pup, what is it?

Re: My first attempt.

Well you got the feel for that one, hehe I am still cringing when I hear it, man it plagued the radios relentlessly back then in the early 90's.... :laugh2:
Missing mp-3 tracks Lee??

Re: My first attempt.

Very smooth groove. :)

What did you use for guitar, p'ups, amp, etc.?

I haven't got a great deal of gear, I'm not into all that stuff.

The guitar is a Gordon Smith Graduate 60 (Like a Les Paul junior) no frills but plays well.

The pups were 59-C5 with the toggle in the middle and the C5 split and the tone and volumes notched back to about 7.

The amp is a cheap Marshall tranny practice amp (£115) straight into the computer from the emulated headphone socket into Adobe Audition.

It doesn't more basic than that.

I like to think that I can do with basic gear what some (not on this forum) can't do at all.

Well that proves that a big part of your sound is in your hands... and that you would sound killer with high-end gear, Lee :)

I use Cool Edit Pro 2, same software before Adobe buy it. I tried others but always come back to this one. Simple and effective, no frills.

I can't believe you get that tone with a small Marshall... now I really know that my Beringher Direct Box is crap... I had better direct recording with my Roland Cube 30. Time for a change...

Re: My first attempt.

Lee, you're setup is only slightly different than mine. ;)

I go: J-Station>older Tascam mixing board>sound card>Audition.

I like simple and clean. :)

Re: My first attempt.

I thought it was great, Lee. Nice finger work, great tone....you really showed how you can use a minimal amount of gear, add it to some nice background rhythm, and make a nice, complete sound.
I don't care how many times I hear that song, I still love it every time.

Re: My first attempt.

Nice, Lee...the dynamics in there really make the listener feel it.

Re: My first attempt.

Great playing, but it was kind of excedingly smoothe, there were alot of times where I was thinking an extreme bend or something more agressive sounding (something like a minor 3rd interval) would have fit in perfectly, but good stuff none the less.

Re: My first attempt.

Thanks for the encouragement folks. I'm going to be away for a week from today, I'm off to Copenhagen (Denmark) for a week - so that is why it's a rushed job.

When I get back I'll try and do something a bit more polished as this clip was just a first take and it takes me a while to dial into the timing.

I'm particularly pleased that you all commented on the 'dynamics' of the playing style as that is what I base my playing around. I've got large strong hands from working in the construction industry, (not as large as Gary Moore's though, his are huge), and I hope that this helps me get some emotion/feel into the piece.

I'm just glad to have put something up on the board and now I'm not a 'clip virgin'. I always felt a bit of a 'fake' being in a guitar forum and not posting something.

It's rather daunting though as the standard in here is so high.

It's amazing how little gear you need to make a clip though. Guitar, small amp, Adobe Audition (or similar software) and a computer.

Anyway, thanks to you all again, and now I can go on holiday a happy chappy.
