My friend's SG broke again.

That is not the guitar but it's what the damage looks like. He broke the headstock on his SG special again. I don't know whats worse: that he kept his repaired guitar on a stand as if it were indestructible, or that it wasn't his fault at all. His brother walked into his bedroom in the middle of the night, searching for something, and knocked over some stuff, which then knocked the SG off it's stand and...off goes the head. :banghead: THIS is the reason why he wanted to check out the Jim Adkins Telecaster, and ignored my plea for a tube amp. His only guitar right now is an Epiphone Les Paul Custom. It's a decent guitar, quality is on par with my Gibson V (more or less). He told me he doesn't want to repair the SG again, which leads me to this: I'm about to offer myself as a tech. No, not to repair his SG, but to transplant any superior components from the SG, to his Les Paul. I was thinking mainly pickups. He's my best friend, and a great guitar player, but isn't a DIY kind of guy. I'm thinkin' I could lend him my telecaster (hoping in the event of anything it'll bounce back) and keep his Les Paul for a few days while I set it up and tidy it up. I just thought this would be a cool idea. I also thought about taking the 500T from my V and installing it in his les paul, and he could give me the bridge pickup from his SG as part of the deal. He wants another guitar... what I'm trying to do is make his Les Paul a formidable guitar, so that another guitar doesn't seem as necessary. I could let him use one of my Fenders (*shudder*) or my flying V (preferable) as his back-up guitar. Seem cool? I mean now that I have my Hot Rod Deluxe, not only can I be much louder (effortlessly) but I also cut through, just because the gain on the Deluxe is so smooth, and the amp is middy.

I like that. I think you have pretty good ideas and if you feel ready to boost his guitar, Go ahead. I think you'll feel great if everything goes well. Anyway, if you don't try to uppgrade his guitar, he might want to buy an other guitar. At worse, if you scrap his guitar than he'll have a good reason to do so. Go with confidence and make him a nice guitar!

Re: My friend's SG broke again.

Trouble is his remaining guitar (the Les Paul) is just as vulnerable to headstock breaks as his SG. Unfortunately it's part of the deal with Gibson-style electrics.

He needs to either:

a) Learn to keep Gibson-style guitars in a hard case when not being played (or at very least get a more secure stand like the Hercules that holds the guitar and stops it getting knocked off)

or:

b) Make the switch to Fender!

I would not advise lending someone so accident prone one of your own guitars. Reminds me of the day recently when my 17-year-old son (who plays bass) asked whether he could borrow one of my guitars for his friend Tom to play on "because all Tom's guitars are broken"!

Yes of course son. Here, take my favourite Les Paul for him :smack:

Re: My friend's SG broke again.

whats going to happen to the old broken SG? If no one wants it I would be more then happy to take it off your hands. My uncle wants a guitar but doesn't have any money (ex-wife/bankruptcy) and this would be neat project I could piece together for him.

His les paul has a hardshell case. I must tell him to always keep it in there.

I think it's hilarious your son asked to borrow one of your guitars for a clumsy friend. I mean... if you have an epiphone or something it's more plausible :lmao:

Re: My friend's SG broke again.

What pickups are in his SG? And what is in the Les Paul?

It seems pragmatic to me to upgrade his LP with the SG parts if the SG has superior parts. Get the LP working well, let him use your V at shows as a back-up and then he has no reason not to ditch his POS solid-state amp for something with TONE!

If your buddy got a tube amp it would make his LP sound better as it is now than by modding it and plugging it into his Fender FM100.

Don't do it, bro. Not unless he's got a ringer replacement pickup in the SG. Epiphone humbuckers are a complete joke compared to anything by Duncan or Gibson. Please understand that this is not an opinion; it's a medical fact.
That 500T is a great pickup; have you ever played a Les Paul Classic?

A) In all my decades of playing guitar, I've never damaged one, let alone broke a headstock. Guitars should be in a case when they're not being played, especially if you have clumsy brothers or friends within a mile. It only takes a few seconds to put them away.

B) Fender? I'd rather stick needles in my eyes!

Guitar stands are to hold your guitar on stage, while you play another guitar.

Except for maybe my Jagmaster, I've never stored a guitar on a stand for any other purpose than holding it while I mess around with my setup. Specially, specially not a Gibson.

Anyways, best of luck to him.

Re: My friend's SG broke again.

Sucks that it broke again, but if you can make his LP better then I say go for it. And +1 on telling him to keep it in the case, it will hopefully help avoid any similar disasters in the future.

I've heard true-life horror stories of guitars on stands on stage, that got knocked over by one of the other band members stumbling around. Most stages are too small and crowded. I put mine back in the case during breaks (and set it up on some thing, where it won't get stepped on).

Re: My friend's SG broke again.

I play cheap guitars and beat the tar out of them. I can only really bond with something after I know it can take a punch.

EDIT: And I still wouldn't lend that guy my guitar. Swapping pups sounds worthwhile, though.

Re: My friend's SG broke again.

Its an Epiphone - if it breaks, you throw it out and buy another one.

his sg is a gibson. its an SG special.

i do have a flying v with a 500t.

Re: My friend's SG broke again.

A short fall from falling out of the stand or knocking the stand over caused the head to snap off? I find that hard to beleive.

I've done that before... tripped over the guitar stand while my LP was in it. Guitar stand with guitar in it fell face first. **SMACK!!!** Luckily nothing happened.

I'm not saying BS, but something worse than just getting knocked over must have caused the head to snap off. I don't think heads break off as easily as others would have you beleive...

For not taking care of a Gibson, he deserves a Fender.

Seriously, tell him to get his lazy butt in gear, and put his stuff in a case. I never used guitar stands, ever, even when I first started playing at fifteen. When I gigged, my backup was in a case; between sets, case. I don't even like the idea of wall hangers. I'm just anal that way, lol. Even if I lay a guitar on a bed or couch or whatever for a moment, the headstock hangs over the edge so there is no pressure on the neck joint. About the only time I've laid guitars flat on something is to take photos. It literally takes seconds to put it in a case. If that's too much of a PITA, then the laziness has taken a stronger foothold than normal, and must be beaten out of him: AND YOU'RE KATY PERRY LUVIN' BUTT IS THE ONE TO DO IT!

Hey man, we don't know what happened. Just that his brother showed up with the headstock in one hand and the axe in the other. Said something fell on it.

Re: My friend's SG broke again.

I knocked my SG over once on its head. It snapped the D tuner, but that was it.

+1. If you pay a few hundred dollars (or more) for something, anything, you take care of it. After enough losses you either learn, or you make lots money so you can keep wasting things.
