My friend's SG broke again.

Re: My friend's SG broke again.

+1. If you pay a few hundred dollars (or more) for something, anything, you take care of it. After enough losses you either learn, or you make lots money so you can keep wasting things.

You can spend a few hundred or more on a meal. Guitars are only objects.

Re: My friend's SG broke again.

Check which Gibson HBs were in that SG Special. Could turn out to be a 490T/490R pair. Obviously, better than OEM Epiphone HBs but is the Epi a suitable host for the American parts?

Your proposed project involves enlarging the holes for the pot shafts and selector switch. You may find that American HB mounting surrounds do not line up with the metric-spaced Epiphone screw holes. Similarly, the metric bridge/tailpiece studs may not line up with the Imperial T-O-M and Stop Bar.

The job is do-able but fiddly and time-consuming (for little or no reward) and with no guarantee of sonic success. Unless you are being paid by the hour, do not bother. Keep the USA parts for a fresh project. e.g. Warmoth or similar.

Re: My friend's SG broke again.

I NEVER, EVER have my guitars in a stand on stage. Too much potential of damage. Always keep them in their cases safely behind my amps.

I use stands in my music room at home to keep 2 or 3 guitars right next to me that I'm currently practicing/playing.

Re: My friend's SG broke again.

Hey man, we don't know what happened. Just that his brother showed up with the headstock in one hand and the axe in the other. Said something fell on it.

dude, there's a difference between, "it fell," and,"something fell on it." -_-

i say kill the brother.

Preferably by letting something fall on him.

"Oh woops dude, total accident. You're right though, that is an easy mistake to make...."

Maybe in NYC people spend a few hundred on a meal...but that ain't the average American or the average guy on this forum. BTW, everything we own is an 'object.'

Re: My friend's SG broke again.

Sounds more like the guitar fell and the brother stepped on it. Anyway, why bother doing the mod, when you'll have to change the size of the pup spaces in order to accomodate the ones on the LP? Tell your friend to switch to a Fender and start leaving his guitars in cases when he's not using them.

"Switch to a Fender?" That's cruel & inhuman punishment! The idiot that broke the guitar should have to play Fenders. Serve him right.

Re: My friend's SG broke again.

Pickups will drop right in. As far as pots go, it's an easy couple of minutes with a reamer on the Epi. Tuners should also drop in if they're the same type (vintage Kluson style to Kluson style, Grover to Grover). The TP and bridge I'd just leave as is, to be honest.

What is wrong with Fenders? I have a Highway One Strat and a 2006 Modified MIM Strat that both sound great and are much more sturdier than any Epiphone or Gibson for that matter pal!

Here we go, the old "Gibson vs Fender" debate...

I like both. What a controversy! :D

But seriously, AZ your plan sounds like a good one IF all the hardware is gonna fit nicely.

Also, what is the actual pickup you would be trading your 500T for?

I'm not considering swapping pickups anymore. However, I think it would have been a 490.

Re: My friend's SG broke again.

Is the scarf joint on an Epiphone any sturdier than the one-piece construction on a Gibson?

You've been to Scotland. Did you spend a few hundred quid on a meal over here? If you did, you were ripped off, haggis are abundant in the wilds so are dirt cheap!
