rats!!

it's my rga121 - everythings smooth as butter apart from a single fret which chokes out every single time!

is there anything i can do besides getting a tech on the problem? can they recrown just a single fret? money's a dirty word right now :(

cheers guys!

Re: my ibanez has a single dead fret!

I'm not sure if they could recrown a single fret but it sounds like it's either a setup issue or you might need a new fret (just this one) in which case, they might need to do a leveling to the entire guitar.

However I'm not a tech nor do I have your guitar in front of me so I might very well be wrong...

Re: my ibanez has a single dead fret!

if you have one high fret it can be recrowned and that will solve your problem, if you have one low fret then much more work is involved

which fret is giving you trouble?

Re: my ibanez has a single dead fret!

just re-crown it mate. test with a straightedge across 3 frets (problem fret being the center of the 3)

it's the 15th fret.. the rest of the neck plays like absolute butter, i'm totally happy with the rest of the frets - fast and i can bend for days.. the second i bend the top e or B around that area though, it graunches up hard! literally it's dead, a clunk. quite embarassing!

come to think of it it's never actually been properly set up- i've made tweaks myself in the 4 years i've owned it.. everything else plays so right, i might just send it in for an MOT just after christmas..

plus, im shat scared of trying to file away metal myself- electronics i can handle no sweat, but when it comes to stuff you cant just unsolder i'm a wuss!

test with a straightedge across 3 frets (problem fret being the center of the 3)
mint idea, i'll try that tomorrow.. i think it's worse on the treble side!

Don't forget to try to reseat it with a soft tap before you take any metal off!!!!
It may just have lifted a tad.

Re: my ibanez has a single dead fret!

15th fret. Right where the neck screws onto the body. Typical. Fenders have that problem right there too. It's often referred to by guitar techs as the Fender Hump and it's caused by the stress of screwing the neck on at that point. Stress distorts the neck slightly at that point.

The fret needs to be leveled and recrowned - possibly a couple of frets next to it in either direction too.

That's the only way to fix it.
