my mustaine livewires won't work.

I have a DV8-R that came with the livewires and an older axxion that had the older jb\jazz set.

One day, I decided to swap them..
The Jb\jazz sound great in the dv8, and I hadn't decided to wire up and play the axxion till tonight. I got a injury to my back and sides pretty bad and I can't play the V sitting down for more then 5 minutes without some real discomfort.

So anyway I wire the livewires into the axxion, (there's more than enough room for the battery). But they don't work. No joke, I've got it wired exactly as the diagram has shown it as far as I can tell. It just simply doesn't make any sound. I checked and double checked and triple checked my wireing, and it seems to be all good. The battery ain't dead.

Any ideas what could have happened? Some dumb-ass mistake I made that could be cutting off the output before it even gets to the jack, etc.?

Thanks :(

Re: my mustaine livewires won't work.

most active pickups use different pot values than passives, did you swap the pots along with the pickups or no? Thats about the most basic mistake I can think of. Hopefully we can build from there until we find the problem.

Re: my mustaine livewires won't work.

Check the jack connections....it must be a stereo one.

Yup. Make sure you swapped the jack out too (Tip Ring Sleeve for actives) as well as the pots. Basically, EVERYTHING electronic related needs to swap over, not just the pickups. The switch is the only thing that can remain. If the jack didn't get swapped, the battery is probably dead now because with a mono jack (and with the battery hooked up), it's always in-circuit even when the guitar is unplugged.

yep, I switched the pots and the jack too. I tried a new battery and it makes some farting noises and the battery gets really hot. that's the only other info i can give you

Re: my mustaine livewires won't work.

It's wired wrong. The battery getting hot is a sure sign. That means that + and - of the battery are getting connected. My bet is it's at the jack. Double check that area.

jack seems to be wired as the diagram shows. i have the ground from the switch's output connected to the 'sleeve' as the diagram shows it. and the hot from the switch, plus the ground from the battery are wired to the other two parts of the jac. i have switched which is which about 100 times trying to figure it out, neither combination works

Just to be sure, the battery ground goes to the "ring" lug of the jack. The battery hot to the pickups. The switch hot goes to the "tip" lug of the switch.

could you show me a picture which clearly shows which is which? The diagram looks kinda sketchy.. :(

does the ground have to be like this? all connected to the back of the pots except for the one going to the jack, which is not connected to the others?

also, where does the ground wire coming in from the bridge go? it doesn't tell me .

All the grounds (including the bridge one) must be connected together and then to the jack. The only one that must not be connected to the other grounds is the negative of the battery (that one goes to the 3rd lug of the jack).

ok 3rd lug, does that mean the outer most one?

This diagram shows it clearly. Look at the jack and look closely at which lugs are which. With the battery unhooked from the snap, and the jack plate off the guitar, plug a cable in to the jack and then follow the lugs to the actual plug contacts. The tip will hit the tip, the sleeve will hit the sleeve and the ring lug will also hit the sleeve because there is no ring on a mono plug. That ring lug is where the battery negative goes so when you plug the guitar cable in, the circuit is completed (ring and sleeve lugs both to ground). When you unplug the cable, the battery is out of circuit which saves the battery. Stompboxes use the same scheme to preserve the battery when the pedal does not have a plug in the input jack.

Re: my mustaine livewires won't work.

It's the one as the diagram shows. The far left.
that's the first one I tried( and have tried a few times) and that's when it didn't work so i switched them.. i'll switch it back and try again..

by the time i figure out where i went wrong here, my back will be better.. :smack:

Re: my mustaine livewires won't work.

wait, that is in fact exactly how my jack is wired already; even with the battery getting hot and stuff. what gives?

Never mind it's a "good" experience-practice.;)
