Mesa Blue Angel, 1 x 12 combo

I've had my eyes out for one of these for a while. Actually, I went and looked at a head when they first came out, after I read the rave review on Guitar Player those many years ago.

I might tweak the tubes just a bit, but other than that, she's ready to go. Other than the early Boogies, this is one of the few "simple" amps Mesa has made.

a friend of mine has the exact same amp, i like it. its one of the few mesas that ive considered buying. his has a g12h speaker in it, much nicer than the v30 that was in there if ya ask me.

jeremy,
yeah, the speaker might get replaced
the Black Shadow is rated at 90 watts ... that's too much for a 40 watt amp if you ask me
I have a spare Mojo version of the G12H around here, so maybe I'll try that

I need to go try one of those...I hear nothing but good things about them!

How about a small review once you get some time with it?
thanks, Christian

this thing was listed on Ebay, but it was driving distance, so I went down and took a look at it with my trusty strat, made an offer, and we made a deal.

I've since come home and played it with a tele, the strat again, and my Hamer Artist with Seths.
there are a few rough spots, and some unwanted distortion on certain notes, which makes me wonder about the speaker, so I might switch it out.
I always think I can do some simple tweaks with a tube amp to get it dialed in a little more to my liking, whether it's tube swapping or speaker switching or whatever.

when I was testing it out earlier, we did try it through an Avatar cab with a Heritage V 30, and I thought it sounded better, but didn't know if it was the cab or speaker.

anyway, I'm pretty happy ... I've been saying I'd like to get a small Class A amp, but a Matchless or 65 Amps is a little out of my budget for now. :)

I know the first time I looked at one of these, it was a head version, and that thing had beaucoup harmonics ... they just jumped out of that amp, and you could ride the notes and harmonic overtones forever. I fully expect this little combo to get really close. :)

thanks again, as always, for your kind comments and feedback!

Curly-mon, I hope the neighbors in your apratment building love that amp just as much as you do! :chairfall :laugh2:

So far are you liking the EL84, 6V6 or both setting the best?
hey, Christian ...
I asked the guy I bought it from, and he said he always played the 6V6 side. I tried all three settings ... the EL 84 side is a little darker, but who knows if that's the circuit or the particular tubes in there. I went ahead and ordered new sets of power tubes from Bob @ Eurotubes, so I can get this sounding as good as possible. I also got a G12H 30, partly due to jeremy's comment, plus I did think the speaker could sound better, and was over rated power wise.

Lew,
I'd love to have a little house in the country, like you, but my neighbors have been pretty cool - they say they like my playing, although I'm sure they'd like me to shut up sometimes. :)

Sounds good...what tubes did you end up with?

Keep me posted on this...I have always liked the idea of those amps.
I got JJ 6V6s and EL 84s to replace the current ones, and a balanced phase inverter.

although I'm partial to combos, I might recommend the head version to others ... more bottom and you have some choices with cabs. also, the amp has a 4/ 8/ 16 ohm switch, so you have lots of ways to go.

Re: My name is Curly ....

CURLY !!!!!!!!!!!! :bigthumb:

I had the 4x10 & the head, so I know you're loving it. Do you have a 4x10 cab ? I'd recommend running it thru a 4x10 open back with alnicos all around. BEAUTIFUL!!!!

ALSO....you can order a Mesa head cab from them if you think you'd rather go that route.

As for the settings, I preferred the Simul-link myself...just added a nice full round 3-D tone it.

Good for you....definitely on my list of things I wish I never got rid of!!!! :smack:

Re: My name is Curly ....

thanks, PUCK

well, the 4 x 10 combo like you had was too bulky and heavy for me, although I do like that configuration.

I didn't really know you could just convert it over into a head cab, so maybe that's something to think about. I did think it sounded a little better in the head version I tried, but I'm tweaking mine to see if I can take care of that.

of course, 1 x 12 combos are a nice little package too

I'm going to ask over on the Mesa Boogie forum, but does anyone know if you can get schematics? Even to just check the tube layout would be nice, because I don't see a tube chart, and there isn't one in the online version of the owner's manual.

thanks

Re: My name is Curly ....

Congrats Curly! You, as always, have GREAT taste in gear! And please post a clip when you get the chance, I'd love to hear it!

Re: My name is Curly ....

Hey Curly....the Mesa Forum (Boogie Board) would be a good place to start for the schematic.

As for the head cab, yeah, you can order them in any color tolex you'd like, complete with reverb tank....For you, I'd recommend BLUE :D

I did post over there, and found a schematic, although it was barely legible.
Is there a serial # somewhere on the chassis, BTW?

and yeah, if I got a head cab, it would be blue ... it's a Blue Angel!

Sweet! The IRS is shipping amps instead of checks now. NICE!! :D
yes, I guess you're right in a way :)

it would've been difficult to direct deposit though.
