yea i know its not a tube amp.

Dimebag got GREAT tone out of SS. I rather have his tone than most other metal tones out there. Remember that just cause it is not tube, dont make it bad and just cause it has tubes, does not make it sound good.

I had a Peavey XXL that sounded better than 95% of all amps I have ever played. Most that played it swore it was tube. It was SS all freakin day long.

Re: my new marshall mg100hdfx half stack

did ya get the purple one thats out? cuz that'd be mega cool. but way not to be a tool and go for tube b/c its tube. i've fallen into that trap a couple of times myself

Re: my new marshall mg100hdfx half stack

i use Solid State Fender amps all the time... i get along with solid state stuff just fine... But i found that the Marshall MG line is good sounding but can be extra noisey... do you get a lot of hum with that amp by chance?

Re: my new marshall mg100hdfx half stack

who fan.i dont know about noise,i havnt played it.its paid for but the gc location i go to had to get it from another store.i hope not its got the 30 day money back thing if i dont like it......what the hell the crate flex wave stack looked interesting

Re: my new marshall mg100hdfx half stack

I just sold my MG15DFX and I hated that thing. Too harsh for my taste and not very good sustain. Hope that yours is better.

I don't really think you can compare the 15 watt mini combo version to the 100 watt half stack....

Re: my new marshall mg100hdfx half stack

I don't want to sound like a prick and ruin new amp day.
It's not that you can't make good sounding solid state amp, but the cheapest marshall is probably not the best candidate for "good sounding solid state amp". It's made in india or china with the cheapest possible components.

A lot of things are made in india or china. Some of them sound good. I know you are not trying to rain on the parade, but I really don't think it's fair to judge the entire line of MG amps based on the 15 watt model. 15 watts through a 10'' speaker will sound different than 100 watts through 4x12. Might not be the best sounding solid state, but it's still going to get it done for him. We'll that's my opinion.

Re: my new marshall mg100hdfx half stack

I was happy with it once I got it but soon after got spoiled with tube amps once I learned how to build them :) At that time I couldn't afford anything better than MG either :(
Cheers!

cool... the MG ones i tried had lots of hiss and hum that the amps could do without... i hope you have better luck... I didn't mind some of the sounds from the Valvestate line i tried out last year... but even they sounded better with a slight bit of volume

i have an early 2000's Fender Stage100DSP head that has the same hum and hiss i got with the Marshall MG line under heavy distortion... That Stage 100 DSP head would not sound bad if it was not so noisey... i just use it at friends basement parties and stuff were i don't care about the noise and don't want to take my good stuff.... besides that Fender head was only $200 new at a stores boxing day sale a few years back... it had sat there for years...

a lot of these cheap SS amps would be amazing to me and useful if they could get rid of the extra noise the cheap parts seem to add....

Re: my new marshall mg100hdfx half stack

I had bought a MG250DFX and liked the sound through a 4x12 as long as it was not cranked. I ending up doing the reverse you did and sold mine to get the Spider III 150w combo. Much better amp IMO but again, I would not gig with it or the MG Series amps. I have a pair of JCM 2100 SL-X heads running 4 Marshall JCM 1964A (2) and 900 Lead series (2) cabs. I also have a early JCM 800 50w head and until recently, a DSL100. The Spider III is a cool practice amp that delivers good features and Celestian speakers to boot. Same problem as the MG... as the volume goes up, the tone goes out the window

My favorite sorta SS???? I have a JMP-1 w/ an ancient mean green Altec 250w amp, that combo (in the immortal words of Ted Nugent) blows the balls of a charging rhino at 50 paces

Buy the best you can afford and make sure it sounds good and suits your playing. In the end, the only one you have to please is YOU. I remember being a kid and all I could afford was a Sunn Beta Lead 2x12 combo. Know what? It still is one of the best SS amps I ever heard

north winds commented about losing tone in high volume levels.........bummer.im a loud freaking guitarist.i guess we will find out monday when i pick it up

Re: my new marshall mg100hdfx half stack

Meh, any good guitarist with an ear for tone could get some nice sounds out of that amp. Whenever I play a solid state amp, I just play with the EQ until I get it sounding nice and rich. Tube amps tend to have more mids, so that's always the starting point for me (every nice boutique tube amp has strong, smooth mids). EQ is a powerful thing, and I'm sure that if you work slowly and listen carefully, you can craft your tone into something pretty nice. Remember that tubes don't have magic pixie dust in them, and amps are all built differently.

And before I forget, congrats on getting the new amp, it looks like fun. :)

Re: my new marshall mg100hdfx half stack

Solid state isn't all that bad.

I think Chuck from Death used that family of amp. (it might be valvestate though)

He got a pretty good tone but I am sure its his hands and the X2N pickup.

Dimebag got a killer metal tone... He had alot hitting the preamp and had noisegates though.

Chuck used a Valvestate. In an interview, he said that he thought it was the best amp for hard rock and heavy metal. He used to have big empty stacks in his show, and just the mic'ed Valvestate in the back. The tones he got out of that thing really complemented his style. He's the type of guitarist who wasn't really obsessed with tone, but just tried out gear and found things that suited him well. Aside from the Valvestate, the only pedal he used was a chorus, and that was just for some leads.

Actually, I like his tone from that Valvestate more than I like most guitar tones I hear coming from the big tube amps. Chuck Schuldiner was pretty much the man!

Re: my new marshall mg100hdfx half stack

Wayne Static from "Static X" uses Marshall MG100 watt heads, I'm not familiar with his work or his tone, but he uses them according to "Vulgar Display of Power" on the back page of Guitar World.
