He works at a guitar store in Toronto and is one of the most brilliant guitar players I know. His name is Robb Cappelletto, just because I feel bad about reposting his comments and shot without attributing him. He does a lot of the tech stuff in his shop, and the other day someone sent in a 1959 Les Paul for some fretwork. Freaking beautiful guitar man, I wish I got to see it before it passed out of the shop.
Here's what he said about it (across a few facebook comments):
"Original #1959 #Les #Paul #Sunburst in the shop today. Very nice guitar, amazing neck! #gibson"
"Not for sale, was a customer guitar. Got to play it for a bit, nice dude, great guitar. An R9 isn't even close. PRS wide fat neck is pretty much right on the money for this thing."
"Also had the hottest PAFs of the half dozen or so sets of 59's I've been fortunate to spend time with. Big and fat, lots of low mids, no nasal honk that some PAF bridge pickups can have. Probably alnico II and wound hot in the mid 8k range. Still had that inexplicable clean up that these old guitars have...very cool"
"the owner is a player and had it refretted about 10 years ago, other than that it is all original right down to the buttons on the tuning pegs."
I think the most interesting comment is the one about the PRS Wide Fat neck being closest in feel to it, considering that they have ditched that neck on everything but their SE line now.
