My workhorse; the one I never talk about. Strat content.

Inspired by the budget #1 axe thread. Out of every electric guitar in my stable (which I think is pretty interesting, see signature), this one has played the most shows, been to the most rehearsals, and travelled the most. I never really talked about it though.

2009 Fender Highway 1 Stratocaster. I never really talked about it, even though I play it ever day. I started out by playing her stock for a while, because I wanted a "pure" stratocaster. That didn't last very long.

Before bringing it to the stage, I added a SD hotrails to the bridge. I dislike single coil bridge pickups, so it made sense. It's what they had at the store, and it fit the bill quite nicely. I also slapped on a set of Schaller straplocks, which don't exactly match, but like with the pickup, I decided I wanted to take my new guitar to the stage, and it's what they had in stock. When doing the pickup install, I put in new pots. Not because they were of different values, but I wanted pots with a little more stiffness for the tone pots, and a smoother feel for the volume. It's also worth noting that the second tone pot also affects the bridge pickup. I also put it a stereo jack, wired mono, lol. I like the extra hold it has.

I broke a saddle on the guitar at some point. When I noticed it, I replaced it with string-savers. I don't know much about them except that they are graphite, and they did alter the feel of the guitar a bit. Firstly, they replaced bent steel saddles, so they feel better for palm muting. They also seem to tame a bit of the high end. The trem is locked down. It's not blocked, but it'S down so tight that it never moves. It's also a virgin, I've never had the arm in there.

Cosmetically, I dig this guitar. Hwy1s have a matt finish to start with, but the guitar's color dulled out something fierce when I flew it out to Alberta this summer for a series of shows. It's been in and out of cold, heat, humidity, hard sun and everything I could throw at it. It's made the finish look really different actually. It's chipped all over the place, but I think it gives it character. The neck finish is starting to grey out a bit behind the neck, but I'm not worried about that. Jumbo frets, so plenty of life left on those. The knobs and pickup covers are artificially aged. I just hate the look of white on white. So I took those parts, used my coffee and other liquids method, and went to work with that. I know, shallow, but I like that look better.

I dig this guitar. It's not as polished or smooth as my Gibsons, but it has guts. It's travelled with me for as long as I've had it, slept outside, been banged up, and it just works. She's a 3 piece, budget strat, but for about 800$ total investment, I have a guitar that really is worth playing. Super resonant, with a beautiful neck, and a feel that just makes me want to hold it. I think I might try and put a graphite nut in it, and then call it a day. Hasn't caused me problems yet, so that will wait. Out of all my guitars, if I had to have a signature one, I guess this would be it. All my others are stock.

Re: My workhorse; the one I never talk about. Strat content.

Love it. I have a Highway 1 as my main guitar too. Although mine is older and much more damaged than yours! You must have really polished and cherished her.

I have the graphtech saddles too. I couldn't tell you whether they changed the sound at all or not but they're cheap and they fit. I couldn't get the strings high enough with the stock saddles.

How is she wired? I put in a megaswitch in my Julia (yep, the single man names his guitars with girls names) and wired it this way:
1: neck pickup
2: neck + middle
3: neck + bridge split
4: middle + bridge split
5: bridge humbucker

Pot 1: humbucker volume
Pot 2: single coils volume
Pot 3: master tone

This is basically the perfect Strat wiring for me.

Re: My workhorse; the one I never talk about. Strat content.

I agree; they are good guitars.

I inherited blonde one when my dad died. But as I also got another Strat from him in the same lot (a very sentimental one), and already had two of my own, I decided to sell the Highway 1.

Re: My workhorse; the one I never talk about. Strat content.

She actually looks a lot cleaner on the pictures compared to in person. The edges have little chips at the bottom, and the arm rest is starting to wear. Oh well, part of the guitar I guess.

She's wired pretty standard actually

P1= Bridge
P2= Bridge + Middle
P3= Middle
P4= Neck + Middle
P5= Neck

Volume
Tone (neck)
Tone (middle + bridge)

I wouldn't say she's my #1 guitar, but she's the one I take with me when I can only take 1. My LP is still the crown jewel of my collection, but I use her mostly for bigger stages when I can bring many guitars, or studio work.

My own first version Highway 1 strat body in sapphire blue with vintage style bridge,but has a 1983 flat 12" radius American Standard neck on it,Surfers/Twangbanger bridge...Awesome Mongrel strat put together...Blend pot for the bridge/neck pickups..

Do you both have the smaller headstocks? Mine has the 70s style.

Yeah. Pre-2009 (I think? Could be 2008) had the smaller ones. Mine's a 2002, but I bought it in 2007. Had stayed in the same store all this time, barely played and looked at. Sounds better than any other Strat I've played except 1 Custom Shop which was just exceptional.

I bought just the body on E Bay and then stuck a really nice 12" flatter radiused early 80s neck on mine...The headstock has the ultra cool 50's style spaghetti Fender logo on it.

Very nice.

The hwy1s are nice guitars. Kinda different, but interesting. I might pick up a second one, now that they seem to be switching out.

Mine still lacks the cool relic look though.... ;o)

Aye I play this guitar A LOT... she's gone through knocks, even solder bits on her finish. And I never even gigged her (yep, in 7 years of playing guitar I never yet managed to find 1 gigging band, and now I live in one of Europe's smallest countries... it feels my time is past).

I dig the minimalist deluxe spaghetti letter look on these

I was appalled when I dinged that area by where right elbow sits, but it has grown on me. Who said poly didn't naturally 'relic' well?

Tomorrow I will have my new neck...A maple/rosewood,vintage headstock shape,9.5" radius,and medium frets for one of my other strats...Then I need to re-finish the headstock and back of the neck...Stick a decal on the headstock,seal it and set er up..Might have to re-nut it also?

I had a 2006 Highway 1 (60th anniversary) and it had the 60's headstock. Must have been pre-2005 for the smaller headstock. IIRC in 2005 they changed a few features, notably the electronics - they went to Alnico 3 pickups and a Greasebucket tone system. I wish mine had had a 50's headstock - I like that look more. I sold it anyway - I just couldn't jive with the neck. Too wide and thin. But damn, did that guitar sound good. I'll have to get another strat one day to put the same pickups in it. JB Jr bridge, SSL-5 middle, Lil' 59 neck.

That black finish with the steel guard looks wicked.

Re: My workhorse; the one I never talk about. Strat content.

Kinda wish I still had it. But if I hadn't have traded it for my old Faded SG, I wouldn't have been able to trade the SG for the Bassman. So I'm good with it.

Still miss it sometimes though.
