NAD (Did'nt expect this...)

And w/ my lowest gain amp (which to be honest I don't play much at all :p...though I think it's still nice to have around for moments like this..)

Probably 3-4 years since I've even switched it on. Glad it still works.

Plugged it into the Vox 1x12 w/ the Redback...eveything else is the same as the two clips above.. bigthumb:

I probably dialed the mids in too strong...but it still sounds ok otherwise ..despite the neglect :p

It's got even less gain than I remember it having though, might need a tube change/have a bad filter cap or something.. or maybe the Vox/Redback cab is'nt a great match. It really used to like my 1x12 w the Eminence Legend GB128..I'll maybe hook it up to that and see..

With my Audio Technica AT2020 condensor "off-axis" to shake things up a bit...it sounds pretty much the same as before though. :laugh2:.maybe a little smoother?

A good friend of mine got the full-sized Night Train. He uses it as a pedal platform but I’m pretty sure it could be dialed in and coaxed to give up the goods.

Mine is the 50W one with 2 EL34's. I think that's the biggest one they made. There was also a smaller 15W one with EL84's..

As far as I know they're both discontinued.

This amp will shred liquid solo's/80's metal/doom by itself (sounds great too) & do more modern/heavier/chuggy metal with a boost, otherwise it's more suited for rock/classic/hard rock. Personally I think it sounds amazing for that :bigthumb:

That’s what I said and it does sound great like that but he’s after a Morbid Angel - Domination. I still maintain he could get it with the girth channel, an OD and just try a different cabinet or throw an EQ in the loop.

lol, who is'nt :lmao:

I only bought this amp 'cause I read all over the place that they're great for doom & Morbid angel does have that kind of messed up , murky, sludgy dark tone..so not too far removed.. I can see it getting there w/ a boost...

For Messhugah ...you have to look elsewhere :laugh2:

I'm not one of those who got a Vox cuz "it was the Beatles amp" ( ..just Iiked that it was cheap and could get pretty heavy cuz, bottom line ..I like gain. :bigthumb:)..but yeah, I do enjoy playing all kinds of things..shreddy stuff. metal, rock, hard rock blues, doom, melodic rock/metal and pretty much everything else you can play on a guitar....

It’s like what happened to the Fender ProSonic due to players judging amps with their eyes. Everyone who has one holds onto them for dear life, including on this forum because they’re total sleeper hi-gain machines and that channel carried over to the well received Supersonic.

I have a thing for sleeper amp's. Don't get me wrong I love the Marshall's and Soldano's and Rectifier's as much as the next guy, but there's something about quirky, underrated amp's that gets my blood pumping :D

The one's I avoid are flavor of the month type trendy amps that sound just like everything else out there and lack any sort of character/individual flavor....but are touted as "the best thing ever", "most brutal" etc for a month.. or amp's like the 5150 (and all it's 101 off-shoots/variants). They're great amp's, but too overused/stale sounding...everyone and their grandmother is playing them.

The 5150 is not a flavor of the month amp, LOL. It's been "the best thing ever" for like 30 years now, LOL. There are many tones you can get from it too. Burn My Eyes sounds nothing like The End of Heartache, IMO... or like the Balance, LOL.

It's just an all-around good amp, though. It sounds great, it's not hard to tweak, it's hard to tweak it to an extent where it starts sounding bad, it's not too expensive, and it's proven very reliable. I mean, that's as an objectively good amp as it gets.

I get what you mean, though. I do love the 5150, but it's not my dream amp. I understand trying to be different and finding your own tone. My own personal dream amp is a Krank Revolution which everyone seems to hate. I also had a Marshall Mode Four which was HORRIBLE unless you set it just right. In that case, it was kind of a caricature of a Nu Metal amp which when set just right, turned to be kind of a hidden gem for Death Metal. However, I do like pretty scooped and 90's-sounding tones.

No you misread my post. I said I had no interest in flavour of the month type amps (Revv/Driftwood etc) OR amp's like the 5150/derivatives which are stale and overused. Not that the 5150 was a flovour of the month amp itself. Did'nt say that. Did'nt say it's a one track pony either. In fact I said it was great amp ..just overused, especially for modern genre's (metalcore/"progressive") I dislike... as a result I'm just not interested in that amp anymore.

I loved the Krank I played at a friend's studio (don't remember which one it was). It was a bit noisy and dry sounding... but really punchy and ballsy..

Jammed this with my Kramer Pacer w/ a SD Custom5 Bridge & then with my Cort w/ Fishman Open Core Classics...

The Kramer was a bit out of tune (G string was flat) sorry about that :p

First the Custom 5 followed by the Fishman's about halfway through..

Cool how the Fishman's sound pretty much like passives too ..almost no difference :bigthumb:

..they have a couple of listenable tracks for me (Come together & Helter Skelter...so literally two). Are they the best band ever? No.

Hansons and Nelsons both > Beatles

:usa2:

Gotta say ..I've never heard of either the Hansons or the Nelsons (Hopefully not the 80's band "Nelson"?) but I'm sure you're right about that ^^ anyway :lmao:.

I'm no authority on 60's bands. (old but not THAT old :p)

Finally picked up a real SM57 (had two knock off's before..which frankly sound like ass in comparison :laugh2:)

So here we go..more 80's rock than 80's metal..did'nt have the FreqOut hooked up either...No Fx/post...

Were your other mics just different brand/model wannabe 57s, or were they actual "fake" 57s.
I know they have always been a hot item for counterfeits.
