NAD: Marshall DSL100H

I've wanted an amp where I don't need to use OD pedals to get to heavy metal gain levels... I thought I was going to get a Vintage Modern, but thought it might not have much more gain than my JCM800... I tried the Laney Ironheart and could not get my tone from it... So... After looking at videos on youtube and then trying it on a ****ty MG 4x12... I pulled the trigger on the Marshall DSL100H:

I plugged it on to my 2x12 closed-back Mahogany Cab with WGS Veteran 30s as well as my friend's 1960 cab... and it sounds great! As expected... I'm one happy dude! \m/

Re: NAD: Marshall DSL100H

Nice. Congratulations on your new amp. I've always liked the DSL amps and still have a 1923 85th anniversary head. I haven't played it for about 6 months, but I keep it around because every now and then I NEED to play it. You couldn't have chosen better speakers for it man. Vet 30's are incredible. I'm using one in my 1x12 right now and I think it's going to be a permanent replacement for my V30's. My other 1x12 has a Private Jack which has been my favorite speaker for a long time. I don't know what kind of tubes new DSL's come with. In mine, I use Tung-Sol EL34B's and JJ preamp tubes. I think Shuguang and Tung-Sol preamp tubes are a little better than JJ's, but JJ's are a bit darker and that helps because my DSL is pretty bright. Sovtek preamp tubes can be a bit harsh. Mullards are pretty good, but they're noisier on the gain channels.

Cool Marshalls you've got there. It would make an awesome stereo rig to run your DSL halfstack next to the 800, running a tiny bit cleaner.

I don't know what you've done with your JCM 800, but some WGS speakers and new tubes could make that amp come up a few notches as well.

I've owned and tried plenty of DSL's, and I'm pretty impressed with this new version. Congrats on that. I'm sure you'll get a lot of use out of that amp.

Awesome, I just purchased a tsl60 last week. Waiting for my new cab coming in the mail. This is my first Marshall, so I'm hoping I can get those 800 tones and modern, that would be ideal.

I don't know either... but they're relabeled "Marshall" tubes. My JCM800 has JJs in it and I'm very happy with it. When I re-tube my DSL100H, I will put JJs on it.

I wish I had a half-stack. The 1960 was my friend's. I only have space for a 2x12 for my place. At some point, I'm gonna get me a 1960 slant cab though...

I pulled out the Veteran 30's on my JCM800 and moved them to my 2x12 cab. Right now it's got G12-65s. I don't think I'm ever going to pull those out in this combo! \m/

It's pretty good! I'm very happy with it. I even got to toy around with the classic gain (clean/crunch) channel quite a bit. I spend most of my time with it on the ultra-channel though. I bought this amp for metal. The JCM800 would always win if I wanted that classic crunch \m/

Re: NAD: Marshall DSL100H

Congrats fretburner, that Marshall head looks awesome and I bet it sounds even better than it looks!

I know what you mean about wanting an amp that can give you the high gain tone that you need without any "out front" or "in the loop" help. Happy jamming! :fing2:

I hope you and your loved ones made it through the super typhoon okay.

Re: NAD: Marshall DSL100H

CONGRATZ ON A FINE AMP !!!

What type of tones do you want to get with this Marshall ?

I still have one eye om a Vintage Modern . . . maybe next year, June/July.

Good info regarding the valves . . . thanks.

My 1st degree relatives are further up north from the worst hit Tacloban /Tack-law-bun/. Some of my cousins/uncles had their houses torn apart like nothing, but at least everyone's alive and none seriously injured. I recently got news from 2nd degree relatives in Tacloban that they're all alive, though needing all the help they can get.

Thanks for the kind thoughts. The support from the international community has been overwhelming.

Btw... I can't bear to watch those specials on CNN -- too heartbreaking. One mother lost everyone -- she can't hold on to her daughters -- she was the only one left in the family and wished she would have died with them. At that point, I had to turn the TV off.

I'm shooting mainly for Old School heavy metal tones -- Megadeth, Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne -- all without having to push my JCM800 with an OD pedal.

The DSL100H has all the gain I will ever need. I can't get past 3 O'clock on the ultra gain knob (lead 1 or 2). I tried going to 10, but it was way too compressed for my tastes... Way too modern. But I could picture kids doing that stuff and getting smiles all over \m/

GREAT.

Sounds like me with my TV50 (not even mentioning the 5150).
I stop turning the gain before 3 o'clock . . . just too much gain for me, most of the time.
LOTS of volume, massive amounts of low end, and probably 800'ish amount of gain works for me !

And now, i discovered this : http://www.musiciansfriend.com/ampl...l-steve-lukather-600w-active-guitar-subwoofer
