Re: NAD: Marshall JVM410H

I wish I could find one at a thrift store. Damm stingy donors! :D

Congrats. I'm sure you'll get some mileage out of that thing.

Re: NAD: Marshall JVM410H

What really put it over the top for me was some intensely musical stuff happening in the midrange. It seemed to come out a lot easier than on the DSL100H. I also liked all the flexibility and features, like a "series/parallel" effects loop with a level knob, in addition to preamp-out/power-amp-in set of jacks. It seems packed with peanuts and ready to satisfy.

Re: NAD: Marshall JVM410H

A few of the modes on these are buzzy (and useless, AFAIC ), but I don't think there is any doubt the JVM series are better built, better sounding amps overall than the VSLs... by a sizable margin.

You scored. Congrats!

Now..tube rolling...that I can see driving one insane on these...Even on a DSL, no one combination of pre-amp tubes sounds fantastic in all 4 modes. In fact usually one mode is compromised severely, and a second, noticably so.

Re: NAD: Marshall JVM410H

I'm convinced of the ability of Vintage 30's to tame much of the buzziness of a Marshall. I also can't wait to hear how it sounds with my Reverend speaker.

I have no idea what tubes are in it. It's pretty dusty both inside and out, so I'm going to give it a cleaning fairly soon, hopefully not the kind that sees me frying across the poles of a capacitor.

Re: NAD: Marshall JVM410H

It's a fantastic head and IMO the best head marshall ever made. It's so versatile and good sounding.
Great score my man.

Welcome to the club.

Is that tower secured in some way? I fear for the safety of those involved.

Re: NAD: Marshall JVM410H

It was rock solid as is....but only for a week or so while the wife was away. I was using it to strip paint off the opposite wall. Worked a treat! It's usually just the Marshall and the 4x12 Carvin.

It must be like finding a set of tubes that work well in twelve different amps.

Re: NAD: Marshall JVM410H

I got these (the Green Quartet) on the recommendation of the local Marshall tube amp tech: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/svetlana-el34-matched-power-tubes

I recall him saying these seemed to be the most reliable at a decent price point while offering good tones. I've been running my amp about 10 hours a week at gig volume for more than a year and I've had zero issues with these power tubes.

For preamp stuff I went with Eurotubes using their standard 100W preamp retube kit. It's just fine but I think next time I'll try the Gold Pin option.

Re: NAD: Marshall JVM410H

The Svetlana EL34s seem to be a love/hate tube. I've not tried them, though I have come close to pulling the trigger on a pair. Some users say they are really nasal and harsh. Some say "reminds me of my old xyz toobz from yesteryear...love 'em".

I'm really digging my KT77s, but the Svetlanas are on the shortlist.

Heh. I hope not, for your sake.

Its kind of hard to go wrong with ehx or svetlana or tungsol for everything (but no tung sols in the cathode follower-they get fried there) and a sovtek lps in the PI.

Really nasal and harsh has been my experience with a quad of Svetlanas. I tried them in my Marshall JCM 2000 DSL100 and in my Peavey Windsor and got bad results with each. The DSL took to the Svetlanas better than the Windsor did but my regular old JJ's smoke 'em in both amps.

Re: NAD: Marshall JVM410H

That's one of my favourite Marshalls, one of my mates has one as his main gigging amp and it does him proud. Rock out and enjoy.

Re: NAD: Marshall JVM410H

That's right, Jerry. It is a heavy pig of an amp. But it sounds good.

Re: NAD: Marshall JVM410H

Congrats, LPB!

As you may know, I also have one of those. It works great with pedals or a processor, whichever way you go. The main thing is setting the main loop accordingly. And head over to www.jvmforum.com and read, read, read. That place is a great resource, especially if you decide to mod it, like I did mine. And trust me, mods make it more gooder!

I put some Svetlana EL34s in my JVM recently, but haven't had the chance to really excersize them. But so far, they don't seem to quite measure up to the original SED Winged Cs that it came with. I kept them in there longer than I should have, but they sounded good and I wanted to use them as long as I could. But when they started cutting out after getting warmed up, I knew it was time.
