NAD/NCD surprise!

CTN

The Drama Dude
I really was not expecting to have any new amps, but I listed my red Squier for sale on CL. Wasn't getting any bites, and then the other day, a guy msg'd me asking if I'd be interested in a trade for a "Blackstar HT-5 Metal". He got the model name convention slightly wrong so I asked him if it was the head or the combo. He said it was the head, and that he'd include a marshall 15W cabinet.

I've played the regular HT-5 a few times. And I hated it how it sounded but loved how it looked. It sounded boxy, nasal, and weak in the balls department. I wasn't sure about the HT Metal series so I did some research, and decided that it was worth a shot. So I made the trade today. Got rid of that hideous red guitar (I hate red), got a head that was worth the guitar, and a wee lil' cab to boot. It's not an amazing cab mind you, it's one of the MG series MDF cabs. But hey, I already have a badass custom-made all birch 2x12, and I needed something small to bring to low-key jam sessions and such, so this made sense.

The Blackstar is pretty rad though. Looks okay, but it's got nice girth in the lows/low mids and the mids don't sound nasal. The amount of gain on tap is HUGE. more than my tubemeister, and more organic sounding too, somehow. Reverb is nice, and I haven't yet played with the line out, but it should be interesting. Clean channel is really nice actually, spanky and articulate while retaining a good amount of warmth. Lots of good attack/articulation in the lead channel too. Overall quite a pleasing amp, and definitely a good trade on my part because that old Pro-Tone strat was not getting enough love from me. These little beasties will not only get more love, but more of a workout since I now have access to more varied studio tones.

Sometime soon I'm going to build or buy an A/B/Y box so I can play both amps at the same time through different cabs, and at some point I think I will upgrade the 10" speaker in the Marshall cab, but for now, behold;

Apologies for the crappy picture, I'm not Ross Halfin here.

You should stack this on top.

I almost got a series one, I still need one eventually. Blackstar are great

Re: NAD/NCD surprise!

Got to love a trade that turns into something you will actually use ! I have messed around with a couple Blackstar amps and found some decent sounds in them.Would think a tube upgrade might increase the tone pallette?

Cool - Not that it matters much, but are those hybrid or all tube? Curious what they did with their normal line to achieve "metal"

Most likely yeah. I need to order some new power tubes for my tubemeister anyway, so I might as well get some new tubes for the blackstar. It's got a Ruby/JJ high-gain rated ECC83/12ax7 and a 12BH7 for the power tube, not sure what brand.

At some point I'll probably play around a bit with the tubes and see what happens.

That's a good question. I suspect they're hybrid in the sense that not all the drive comes from the tubes (there's only 1 preamp tube after all). But the power section is all tube, using a 12BH7 dual triode tube in push-pull configuration.

I guess they probably just revoiced the preamp and maybe added a couple more gain stages. The front and back control layout is exactly the same as the regular HT-5.

Nice setup, CTN. Looks like a lot of fun. If they can play at near the same level, I would try some =stereo= effects. :rambo:

they definitely can. I could at the very least run my delay in stereo. But first.... A/B/Y so I can play the amps in stereo instead of just having stereo effects.

Though I wonder what it would sound like with the blackstar doing reverb and the tubemeister handing delay via my TC Nova repeater. That could be cool.

Re: NAD/NCD surprise!

I am just so surprised that the squire wasn't good.

Actually that particular one was. But the frets were so worn down and I'm not all that into single coils. It would've cost me over $400 just to turn it into an HH configuration with a refret, which was already more that the guitar was worth. I really couldn't be arsed to spend that much on a guitar I didn't play often and that had a squier logo, even though it did play very very well. One SSS strat (my MIJ '62RI) is enough for me.
