ok, I'm officially dumb (and deaf).
my tech said go ahead and try the jumper, and I didn't notice anything. I took it out and realized the aux vol pot actually does increase the gain more than with just the mic pot cranked (hence both gain stages of the preamp tube are being engaged). It's a weird kinda gain, kinda subtle, but fat as all get out, I can use it.
unfortunately the amp doesn't really sound "all that" with everything dimed (and I'm officially deaf now sucker's so loud), but with my Ross distortion the amp is on fire, 70s style.

(I also came to the realization that my previous chb20a was likely not hot-rodded for fuzz, but probably messed up! I'm thinking a cap crapped out or something to where it had a lot less output and a fuzzy tone. weird how that stuff works).
