NAD - Solid state hotness

I have been flapping my gums for 2 years saying I was going to buy another JC 120 and I finally pulled the trigger. I played one in my old metal band and had it sitting on top of a 4x12 cab. This time around I am going with the JC 120 head and I will run it through my Marshall cab in stereo. I just won the auction the head should be here Friday.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

lol

have fun with it

Re: NAD - Solid state hotness

Nice, the head version seems like a much more practical way to get the JC-120 sound without having to lug around a heavy ass 2x12" combo. Especially if one is mostly using it just for the clean chorus sound.

Does feeding it into celestions smooth out the sound much? The stock Roland speakers on the combo version are quite bright and linear.

IMO the Celestions bring a whole new dimension to the amp it is much fuller

My band is very heavy post-hardcore metal, I will be using it with a crapload of gain. The JC 120 takes to distortion very well. The onboard distortion is useless but with the right stomp you are in bussiness.

Re: NAD - Solid state hotness

I was gonna say A/B it w/teh Marshall & a Pan pedal, but I'm pretty sure you've got the Dist bases covered...

'Grats!

Awesome!!! That's a nice little head. Enjoy. :D

Re: NAD - Solid state hotness

Killer - one of the only clean tones I like. I'd love to have the head version since the combo takes up a ton of room. They have that newer smaller combo series out now which looks cool too, but I think it's lacking an effect or two from the one I own.

That was the deal for me. I have so many combos and speaker cabs I could not justify bringing another speaker in the house. Plus I am downsizing.

Re: NAD - Solid state hotness

I recently came across a web page about the venerated JC- line and found out about an amp I previously didn't know of, the JC-200 head. I've never seen one in the wild, but DAY-UM!

A lot of my favorites in the olden days of yore ("yore" is an olde English word meaning "the '80s") used JC-120s, often in combination with Marshalls. That mixed stack of Marshall 4x12, JC-120, JCM800 head was a classic. Two guys I actually saw play live with rigs like that were Tim Farriss of INXS and "Til Tuesday's Robert Holmes.

Re: NAD - Solid state hotness

I've heard this is what James Hetfield used (uses?) for his clean tones. The JC-120.

Cool score OP!

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if you also uses it for some of the gain tones. Everyone assumes because the name JAZZ in the product name and it can sound beautiful that it can't sound evil. These amps can get downright evil.

Here is James playing the JC 120 there are two Roland stacks (5:40) I wouldn't be surprised if Kirk were using one also.

Roland Major? Even my crazy butt doesn't need/want that.

Jon Schaffer also uses a JC-120. Not sure what sort of dirt he runs in front of it, but it's certainly mean.

I think they started using them with the recording Master Of Puppets. Used the combo version on tour and then eventually incorporated the head version into their rack rigs. During the AJFA/Black Album tours they may have used the clean channel on their ADA preamps instead to save on space. There's some YouTube footage of James during recording of the Black Album and Load noodling around on a JC-120 combo.

James' live rig during the Load era with JC-120H on top:

I must have watched that video 100 times back in the day and never noticed that!! very cool

Re: NAD - Solid state hotness

The head showed up. It is in mint condition. With a bit of vinyl cleaner, you think it was made last week. Decoding Roland JC serial numbers can be tricky but from what I can tell this was made at the end of 1984. I can's wait to plug this beast in tonight.

Re: NAD - Solid state hotness

Wow! I like that better than the super heavy 2x12. I bet it sounds great, too! I wonder what Roland was thinking when they designed that 'distortion' circuit.

You would think with all of the great/classic dirt stomps Roland/BOSS has made over the years the onboard distortion would be great. An onboard DS-1, SD-1 or even the classic Overdrive would have been serious additions to the amp. The onboard distortion can only be described IMO as a watered down, weak version of the BOSS Fuzz. The funny thing is people have been calling the distortion useless for 40 years, and Roland still hasn't changed it.

Re: NAD - Solid state hotness

i just amazes me how that amp can sound magical clean and like it broken when you try and use the distortion
