NAD : The Mesa Express is gone!... enter the...(PICS!)

Best amp I have ever played. Plugged into some Dr.Z amps, a lot of Orange, some H&K stuff, some fender custom shop, a Mesa MarkV, the entire Rectifier series, the Lone star, and this came out on top.

She's a 2009 Stiletto Ace Head. 50 watts, running on 2xEL34 tubes. Modeled after brit rock amps, and it delivers. 2 channels, 3 modes each, with selectable rectifiers right on the front panel. Also has a bunch of neat little features, like a bypass switch for the effects loop, master volume for each channel combined with a master volume that controls the volume of both channels once they are relative. Anyways, if you want full specs, they are out there.

I'll be running it through a rectifier series horizontal 2x12, with v30s. I know it seems strange to get rid of the Express after singing it's praise for so long. The reason I did it is simple : The express what a great jack of all trades amp. It covered all the bases I wanted, and was versatile. It allowed me to truly find my voice. I found myself zoning into the sound I wanted, and eventually knowing exactly what I wanted : a marshall sound, with more gain.

Well this amp does just that. The second I plugged it in, I knew I wanted it. It does the vintage brit rock sound, but with amazing clean headroom (thanks to the selectable silicone diode rectifier), and nasty, wicked gain on the second channel.

If my Express was a 9 on 10, this amp is a solid 10. I decided to go for it, because it offered me a specific flavor that the Express didn't have. I suppose you could say where the Express was good at everything, the one thing it was missing was commitment to a specific style, or tone.

There is no lack of style in this one. It's built to rock, and sounds just great. I could of went for a deuce or trident, but there was something about the Ace that just worked for me. I let my ears decide. It was actually a floor model, and didn't come with the slip cover or manual, so I got it for a song, compared to what they usually go for. Brought it home, shined her of with tolex cleaner and gentle compressed air, and now she looks like new (as she is really).

So yeah, I am happy. Going through the infamous dial in period, but I'm already getting tones that put a smile on my face.

Cheers

Very very nice.. congrats brother. I wish I could try one of those around here...

Re: NAD : The Mesa Express is gone!... enter the...(PICS!)

Nice amp! Tried it when it first hit the streets and I was really impressed. Good luck with it!

Re: NAD : The Mesa Express is gone!... enter the...(PICS!)

That amp is gorgeous. I hope it sounds as great as it looks. I would love to have the money and the excuse to buy one. Congratulations.

Re: NAD : The Mesa Express is gone!... enter the...(PICS!)

Yessss! We're amp brothers now! I actually said "Yay!" and clapped out loud when I saw the pic. My co-workers think I'm weird(er) now.

I would say you made a great choice, but I might be biased. I've had mine for two years now, and I still love it. It may be joined someday by an Electra Dyne or a Lonestar, but I can't see myself parting with my Stiletto Ace at any point. It's an absolute killer rock amp.

Good on ya for pairing it with a nice cab(s) too!

What modes are you using? I use Fat Clean and Tite Gain myself.

Re: NAD : The Mesa Express is gone!... enter the...(PICS!)

No pic of it with both 2x12s? Even if it sounds mean, 1/4 stack doesn't look all that monstrous.

...In all seriousness congrats. When I first clicked on this I thought "Why would phil need a new Mesa" but your explanation seems logical to me.

One of the 2x12s had to go in order to upgrade. It will be back in a few months.

you lucky s.o.b.! in tests, 4 out of 5 dankstars loved it!! ok, all 5 loved it. actually, I think I played a non-ace, whatever that means, but to me a stilleto is a stilleto and I digs it.

Congrats, man. Stilettos are awesome amps - easily in my top 3 favourite amps. I completely sympathise with what you said about versatility losing its value as you hone in on your sound. I recently decided to move from an Axe FX to a Suhr Badger for that very reason.

CONGRATS!

I kinda thought "man, I can't believe he got rid of the Express" then I saw the pic and laughed....

ENJOY! Hope it the band digs it too!

Thanks bros!:friday:

It was weird getting rid of the Express, and a sad moment in a way, since I would have kept both if I could. But, I've always been about finding ''my sound'', not sounding like everyone else, so I see the express as an amp that allowed me to find that sound. I still stand that for people who want a versatile combo, and find their voice, it's the best amp out there, specially for the money.

The stiletto on the other hand.... is pure sex.

A Mesa over an H&K? First I've heard of it!

I'm curious, which did you play? I've been jonesin' for a Lonestar for the longest time!

I played the switchblade and the trilogy.

The Mesa just had a tone that was more thansparent, to my ears, where the H&K was more colored. I also really, really like the vintage vibe of this amp's crunch channel. Seriously, probably one of the cooler tones out there. The tight drives is heaven though.

Plus I'm a fan of mesa, because I never have to worry about them in terms of reliability. You could say I'm a fan, lol.

Re: NAD : The Mesa Express is gone!... enter the...(PICS!)

Ahhh, okay. I've heard some mixed stuff about the Switchblade. Never played a Trilogy, though.

Yeah, I don't doubt it. The Mesa models in recent years are just cool beyond comprehension. I can safely say I'd kill for a Lonestar or even a Stiletto.

Those are waaaaay different though. The lonestar, to my ears, has that fender tone, with a very extended preamp gain stage. The Stiletto on the other end of the spectrum, is a very brit sounding marshall-esque amp, with more gain and insane clean headroom. I like the lonestar, but the stiletto just pushes so much harder if you are into classic rock, with some modern flavor thrown in.

Re: NAD : The Mesa Express is gone!... enter the...(PICS!)

Oh yeah, I know they're way different. But both of them would serve their purposes to me. Doesn't the Stiletto ACE run on EL84?

Nop, it has a pair of EL34s. They seem to give out a tighter, more controled distorted sound than my Express, which ran through EL84s. That could be from various other factors though.
