NAD?

Re: NAD?

Congrats!

You described the tonality of Jeff's amps to a T.

Bober-Watts are nuts. I cannot image how crazy loud your amp is.

Jeff's master volume is indeed special, it has surprisingly little affect on the tone of the amp.

It's the best master volume I've ever used. That's compared to Marshall, Orange, Fryette, Fuchs, Splawn, Mesa Boogie... I've had a lot of nice amps, LOL.

And yes, it's the loudest amp ever. Ever. At noon on the master, it's make-your-stomach-hurt loud.

Re: NAD?

i had no idea they were that loud! ive heard the 18 but not the big boy. glad you like it

I'm actually a little concerned about the volume. I'm hoping I can open it up enough to sound good and not be too loud for band practice. I may have to get a good attenuator for it...

If you're looking for a good resistive-type attenuator grab a Jet City Jettenuator. I've been beating on one with a 100-watt Marshall-type amp at full tilt and all it does is get a little warm and sounds good. Of course, I bought it with the idea of running a dimed Marshall for that EVH sound, and he used a resistive load, too, so it works for that very well tone-wise. Dunno if that works for you.

Re: NAD?

running 6l6 or 6550? ive never heard a better attenuator than a weber mass

6L6

That's one I was vaguely aware of but hadn't considered. I had a THD Hot Plate a few years ago and never thought it sounded very good at all beyond the practically useless -4 db setting.

I've heard lots of good things about the Alex attenuator and Bad Cat Unleash, but that could be mostly TGP hype. VHT just put out a tube-based thing similar to the Unleash, which could be cool. I like the idea of something like that because it would continue to be useful if I find a low-wattage amp I'd like to beef up later.

Re: NAD?

The mid knob has a push-pull function that realigns the EQ curve, hollowing out some low mids and changing the frequencies affected by the EQ knobs. This mode brings the amp much closer to JCM 800 territory and sounds great, but I think I prefer the "bigness" of the standard tone stack.

If I had any criticism at all, it would be that this thing is loud LOUD L O U D. Louder than I will ever need on any stage that I will ever play. The master is a good one, but even at 9 o'clock on the dial, it's pushing more SPLs than my 120-watt Splawn ever could dimed. Nuts. I may wind up using an attenuator or something. I'll know better after I take it to a jam.

Man that's a cool feature.

That's my biggest problem with some great tube amp heads out there that are more than 30-40 watts. I have even had 50 watt combo tube amps where I never really got to use the full power in a band situation and especially not for practice. So many of them are so loud but they can sound so good. These days I am pretty happy staying in the 15 to 30 tube amp range.
