NALD: Boogie Private Reserve Flame Maple Lone Star

I have been Lone Star shopping since I sold my 5:50 Plus Head and Vintage 80's Metal Grill Vertical 2x12 Cabinet a few months back. Been eyeballing this Private Reserve Lone Star for six months now. Every time I go into the local shop I A/B it to the standard one next to it and after all the time I've spent comparing them, IMHO, the solid wood cabinet does make a difference in the tone and it's damn lovely!

Price wasn't horrible on it at the shop as it is used but I was able to negotiate a bit of a discount on it yesterday that made it palatable so I put 50% down on layaway. Will be picking it up after Christmas. One damn sweet sounding Lone Star and man do I love the Private Reserve Solid Flamed Maple Cabinet.

That's beautiful! Where are you shopping down there?

Re: NALD: Boogie Private Reserve Flame Maple Lone Star

Thank you both! This has been collecting dust at the local Music Go Round. I’m too close to a couple of MGRs and Guitar Centers between home and work...it’s like Cheers...they know my name.

I've found a few good deals there, unfortunately haven't been down that way in years.

Re: NALD: Boogie Private Reserve Flame Maple Lone Star

DEVASTONE - they are pretty hit or miss but I check weekly a time or two as they are on my way to/from church and my kids house so MGR is my favorite place to kill time. I’ve been pretty lucky really as I find deals or undervalued gear fairly frequently.

Wow! What year is that from?

Re: NALD: Boogie Private Reserve Flame Maple Lone Star

Those things sure are lookers. Mad expensive? Or unusual enough to drop into reasonable pricing territory?

So you actually got a chance to A/B it side by side vs a birch plywood Lonestar? Also a half-open 2x12 with C90's?

Do tell! Not a lot of people get the chance to try these I'm sure, and even fewer who can actually tell what parts the maple cab brings to the table (besides looking hella gorgeous)

PS seriously curious! Had a few thoughts of building a maple cab DIY to try

Btw what IS it with Mesa and their no-16-ohm-taps policy?

Marketing trick to sell more cabs and/or discourage people from A/Bing with other brands? Always kinda ticked me off.... especially since unlike joe average I actually realize any 16ohm 212 or 412 can be rewired to 4ohm, but it's just a damn hassle and annoying

Re: NALD: Boogie Private Reserve Flame Maple Lone Star

Never had a mesa combo myself, but my Tremoverb and Multi-Triple both have 16ohm speaker outs. (my 95 Dual and series2 Single do not though)

Wow that's a perty Lone Star,,,,,,,,,,get it out of that go-round before someone breaks it! lol

I used to check in there occasionally when I worked down that way, not much in the way of used gear around L'mont. Actually not a ton of gear period unless you can afford to shop at Wild Wood or the PRS/Anderson/Suhr/Collins section at Guitars Etc.

Can't say I miss driving that far to work everyday though.

Re: NALD: Boogie Private Reserve Flame Maple Lone Star

looks amazing and heavy as hell :D

Re: NALD: Boogie Private Reserve Flame Maple Lone Star

Thank all!

Not sure on the year, will dig into that once I get it home...which may be tomorrow instead of after Christmas! ;)

Not crazy expensive and once I got a bit of a discount it was a justifiable/reasonable “upcharge” for the solid wood cabinet version over the going price of the three standards ($1,299.99 pricing on the three) standard model sitting next to it. Honestly; the Reserve just sounded “better” overall than the Standard. I’ve been playing through a couple of 2x12 Standards at the GC by my work (a Blue Tolex and a Black Tolex) as well as the two at MGR and they seem to be consistently sweet sounding amps and much more my preference than the 5:50 Plus Head/80s Vertical 2x12 Cab Set Up I had as I never could get a sound I was really happy with out of it.

Weight wise; it’s about the same as my current 5150 combo and previously owned JMP/JCM combos...in that 72-85 pound range.

Re: NALD: Boogie Private Reserve Flame Maple Lone Star

But sound-wise, what's the change?

Is it like using a guitar with more maple in it?

Re: NALD: Boogie Private Reserve Flame Maple Lone Star

To me; the solid cab produces a more clean/ clear (less ambient noise) and full overall tone/sound than the ply, so yeah, I guess as you stated...somewhat like using a Maple guitar but I think the difference would be clear whether walnut, maple or whatever solid wood characteristics versus a multi-ply cab. I got the chance to try a couple other Private Reserves (as well as a couple of Victoria Amps) at the Guitar Center in Hollywood while on vacation a few months ago and came to the same conclusion regarding the solid cabinets.

Pretty sure I heard somewhere that walnut kinda sounds like maple in instruments anyway? But they're both (relatively) dense and heavy hardwoods

My guess would be they increase resonance and maybe give a slight natural reverb in the same frequencies they'd emphasize if used in instrument building?

It'd be interesting to compare mdf, ply, maple, and a pine fender cab with the same amp and speaker

I can't say I blame you regarding the drive. I like stopping by Wildwood whenever I'm up that way. Was easier when I was going to CU in Boulder. Don't get up that way much unless I'm driving to take a look at a guitar or amp off CL. Never looked at Guitars etc. but I'll have to look them up.
