Nazgul/Sentient

Just finished putting a Nazgul/Sentient in my 8 string. Found a set for super cheap on Reverb that someone had mounted to multiscale bases, and figured what the hell.

My first impression is I’m surprised everyone thinks the Nazgul is such a one trick pony. The clean tone is fine, perfectly useable with the right amp settings. Also, I had an extremely easy time getting a good, even heavy rhythm chug tone across all the strings. This can be tough with an 8.

Sentient sounds great clean, too.

Aside from that, I’m gonna sit on them awhile before I make any further judgments.

I have the Nazgûl/ Sentient combo in a LTD M 7 string and love them. I like the Nazgûl for cleans as well and the Sentient is one of my favorite neck pickups. I can only imagine how heavy they sound in a 8 string.

I haven’t really tweaked a patch for these pickups yet, but with my TS-boosted Dual Recto setting, the Nazgul is absolutely ferocious. I had the Fluence Tosin set in for the year since I got the guitar, then EMG 808X, now the Duncans.

The Fluences have a lot of cool tones, but ultimately the death metal tone I’m going for isn’t there. When I got the low F# sounding great, the normal range guitar strings sound like there’s a wah left on. The EMGs don’t offer the variety of tones, but for metal, they’re awesome. It seems like the Duncans are gonna be a similar result with a different flavor.

The pickups have a soapbar cover on them currently, but I need to come up with a better mounting setup. These covers are pretty thick and impede adjusting the bridge pickup as high as I’d like.

I'm excited to try the 6-string Nazgul trembucker with a black BW-neck, but I still need to order the neck.
They're going in a big explorer type guitar with a maple neck set-into a mahogany body.

The sound samples (on the SD website) of the Sentient are beautiful on cleans, but for this guitar I want more of cutting shredder neck instead of versatility.

Bear in mind BW neck is LOUD. Mine sounds best clean with the volume rolled back. In saying that, it cleans up and splits very well. And yeah, it does high gain even better.

Thankfully this guitar has pickup rings so I'll have a huge range of adjustment. I don't really mind direct-mount with pickups I'm used to and already know their optimal distance from the strings, but if it's a new model for me then the rings are really helpful, especially on the neck models since it's also often a case of trying to match the bridge's output.
