I recently bought my girlfriend a new basic Canon DSLR camera kit (EOS 1200D/Rebel T5). I used to love photography and I even used to work in a photo lab for many years but I no longer have much time for this hobby. She loves it though and has taken up a bit of an interest in learning more about it. She joined a local photography club and I bought her some books so she can learn more about how to use a SLR camera (I haven't owned a SLR since the early 2000's which was a 35mm Canon Rebel). Anyway, the nice thing about her hobby is she wants to get as much practice as she can and luckily my guitars are perfect practice subjects. So, as she improves I will get some free photography of my guitars and will update this thread with some of the better ones. Hopefully this camera purchase gained me some brownie points when it comes time to buy another guitar as well...

She is learning about light manipulation right now as she tries to use cameras without using flash. It's a good skill to master but it takes time. She really is a beginner but she should learn quickly.

She only managed a few decent shots as the sun was already going down when she started today.

Haha, if we are ever in TN I will let you know for sure! It's probably not in the cards right now but you never know in the future. I am hoping to get a band pieced together this year for her to practice photos on too. I like her hobby

Nice. What lenses do you got for it?

So far we only have the EF-S 18-55MM IS II but we hope to acquire a few more this year! Lenses are not cheap!

Yeah. And more expensive doesn't mean better. The little 18-55 is a tropper, though.

Yeah. And more expensive doesn't mean better. The little 18-55 is a tropper, though.

That's for sure! The 18-55 will do for now, it might not have the macro options some other lenses offer but it gets the job done (especially when learning).

Is that a good lens for food photography? I like her taking photos of my guitars and hopefully soon my band but her main focus is food photography.

I hear that man, they sure ain't point and shoot cameras by any means. I used to mess around with SLR cameras a bit but my best work was with dragging out the exposure time in photos like this:

No, but I was driving a manual transmission car while taking most of them.

EF 50mm

+1 on a GOOD 50mm lens.

After that, get the all mighty 85mm . . . pure bliss.

That's for sure! The 18-55 will do for now, it might not have the macro options some other lenses offer but it gets the job done (especially when learning).

Yeah, 18-55 is adequate for learning. If she's interested in food photography, you'd better get a macro lens for her. EF-S 60 or EF 100. Or any medium tele focal length from third party. Besides macro, it will also complement the lens kit as a portrait lens.

FWIW I would advise against a classic macro lens for food photography. A 100mm f/2.8 is way too long on the crop sensor. And a f/2.8 aperture is too wide, it doesn't have enough depth of field to be useful handheld.

The 18-55 is actually pretty good if you start using it at the wide end at f/7.1 or whatever and on a tripod.

Handheld food photography is brutal since there usually is no light but wide apertures just don't have the DOF to be useful there.

Also, I ditched my macro lenses and got extension tubes for my regular lenses instead.
