Neck crack - HELP!!!!

Re: Neck crack - HELP!!!!

You want Titebond. It's reversible, unlike the other two. You can thin it down a little, but take it easy. Get your syringe from a veterinarian supply (online or face or face).

If the crack can’t be opened, Titebond is not going in there.

There is a thing called a "Hydraulic Syringe" for thick stuff/high pressure/small holes...I don't have this thing.

Re: Neck crack - HELP!!!!

Bob, you gotta stop throwing your guitar around. Just play it.

If you can force the crack open even slightly you might be able to get some thinned-down titebond in there using some strong air pressure to blow it in. Thin superglue will soak in there better but you have to work fast because it will start to set up before you can clamp it.

Just know that it's going to get worse before it gets any better. And Murphy's law dictates that it will finally break during your most important gig. Make sure you keep your number 2 very handy until you fix it.

Re: Neck crack - HELP!!!!

Staple it

Buff it smooth add some finish
Sell it as repaired

Hang it on the wall as a conversation piece
Chat about how you broke it's neck wringing the notes out

Re: Neck crack - HELP!!!!

My cousin has a cabinet shop around the corner from the house
He tried gorilla glue when it first came out
And found that Titebond and Elmers Wood Glue worked better

I have know folks who used CA and the Gorilla Glue equivalent on furniture
And the stuff just fell apart
Wood glue is just the proper way to glue wood

If your gluing plastic or something CA, Super Glue, Gorilla Glue, etc will work better

Re: Neck crack - HELP!!!!

There is Gorilla original which is the polyurethane type that expands. There is also Gorilla wood glue. I have some of both. The Gorilla wood glue doesn't seem much different than other wood glues. Wood to wood bond is stronger with a "wood glue" than polyurethane.

Re: Neck crack - HELP!!!!

Yes, I was inquiring about the Gorilla wood glue. It seems to be pretty equivalent to titebond, but it is smoother and easier to work with for me.

Re: Neck crack - HELP!!!!

The brand "Gorilla" used to be only moisture activated polyurethane glue, but several types of glue are now offered under the Gorilla name.

PVA glue (wood glue, e.g. Titebond) is the strongest wood glue there is. Plenty of data out there if one wants to inquire. PVA bonds to the wood with a molecular-level contact and the joints become stronger than the surrounding wood.

Re: Neck crack - HELP!!!!

Gorilla glue expands big time as it dries. Can turn into a mess big time

You don’t use a lot just a dab . Trust me I fixed my headstock with it . Worked great

Re: Neck crack - HELP!!!!

There is no need to overdo glue. Gorilla glue is tough to work with IME. It does this weird foaming thing, and it's hard to get a nice, clean joint. Fine if it's in an area you can sand afterward, but not a good choice for something that's already finished, IMO. Try Titebond (or any aliphatic resin glue, not just that brand) first. It's mild, reversible, and has the strength and resilience for most guitar jobs. If that eventually fails, move up to a higher Titebond number, or epoxy. Epoxy lets you control the working time, cleans up nicely, and won't expand or foam up as it cures.

Sometimes you need to break something worse in order to repair it better. My first though when envisioning a repair for that crack is to work a toothpick into the crack to wedge it open. That might lengthen the crack and it might not. But either way, you'll be able to get glue in there better.

And again, really think about a replacement neck. That's part of the beauty of inexpensive bolt necked guitars.

My experience was years ago when doing some home carpentry project. I felt for sure I wasnt piling it on too much and the crap was everywhere the following day

Re: Neck crack - HELP!!!!

Go with the water thin super glue. I fixed the classic Gibson headstock break with it after the wood glue failed. The key is that there should be no air gaps in the parts mating. The fact that you don't have a full break yet gives you a better chance of success. You just need to keep the pressure on the joint for as long as practical, don't believe the bottle's set time.

Re: Neck crack - HELP!!!!

Interesting. Tightbond has a glue they call "Liquid Hide". Marketing it for musical instrument repair. Viscosity is a bit higher than their other wood glues. Never noticed it before.
Tightbond original is listed as an Aliphatic Resin.
Tightbond II, III are PVA's.

These days, I just grab whatever wood glue is on the shelf. I used to use Elmers or Tightbond, both were labeled as Aliphatic Resins. I never had an issues with either for basic carpentry or speaker cabinets.

I'm guessing that if the crack can be filled adequately, any of them would work.
