Neck pickup in a les paul

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a good neck pickup to match with my custom 5. Ive got a les paul traditional pro, and it does have coil tap. I play a lot of punk music, blink 182 and sum 41 and such, and would like a good neck pickup to pair with the custom. I want it to be able to handle moderate distortion, but clean up very very well. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

First choice for me...Seth,59,Jazz...I always find the 59 a bit boomy for my tastes.

Re: Neck pickup in a les paul

Screamin 'demon: handles overdrive like a champ, cleans up well and is not muddy in a Les Paul's neck slot.

Re: Neck pickup in a les paul

If you like the C5 then a 59 is the one. It's like a weaker C5 they have an almost identical EQ curve. The 59 will be much more open due to the wind being significantly "cooler".

My vote goes for the BG1400

1400 is a pretty big number IMO.

I don't know if any pickups have bigger numbers than that

There's always the x2n but n mean 90 according to wikipedia, so that's only 190 (when you add in the 10 for x)

Maybe if there was a x2nx, but that's not the case

Thanks for all of the help guys, im putting a lot of looks into the demon and a 59, just because that seems like the overal top choices. Is the 59 a little more relaxed than the demon? Or whats the big difference there?

Re: Neck pickup in a les paul

I would recommend the Demon...an absolutely amazing neck pup. It has a more even EQ than the 59...articulate bass but not boomy like the 59 and more mids (the 59 has a strong mid scoop which gives it a kind of piercing high end).

The Pearly Gates is also an excellent neck pup.

+1. '59N's are usually bassy/boomy in LP's (great in SG's though). JazzN would be a good match with a C5, bright and clear, handles distortion well. Some guys like PGN's, but they are noticeably warmer than a JazzN or '59N.

Re: Neck pickup in a les paul

Would it make much of a difference if I was planning on coil tapping the neck as well? Regardless of which pickup it would be, do they still sound the same?

Re: Neck pickup in a les paul

Jazz or WLH.
I suspect the WLH's mids would complement the C5's scoop nicely in the middle position.
Jazz is brighter and articulate with a bigger bass.

The '59n works better for me in maple board strats.

"Coil tapping" is a different thing...you mean "coil splitting". Many people also split the neck pup. It can sound very clear and bright (that may be a good thing or a bad thing depending on what you want/like). It's especially nice if you have a middle position single coil pup, but even combined with a bridge split bucker it can sound great. If you have a DPDT toggle or push/pull switch already it is a simple wiring job. If your existing switch is not a DPDT it would be best to get one to handle splitting both pups.

Depends what flavor you want, vanilla or chocolate. The JazzN is bright and clear, mid-scooped, and a tight low end. PGN is warm with more texture and mids, a little lower output, and a looser low end.

Never played the PG although I have done installs for people, i have to admit that I cant stand the jazz. Unless I have to have coil split then I would go for the Slash signature neck in most applications, its just about the best puckup I've ever played.

Fitting a Black winter set to my new Ibanez soon though so we'll see what the neck on that is like.
