Neck pickup to go with Duncan Distortion?

So I ordered the Distortion Mayhem set for an Epi LP. So far I like the bridge pickup, but the SH-6n sounds kinda dark and bassy when played clean. It's also too tight and compressed. I'm a metalhead, but I think I might need something more "vintage" here. I also think the guitar sounds naturally dark. I ruled out the '59n because to me the DDn sounds like a hotter, more compressed '59 model. I need something with more clarity and a good clean sound.

So I was considering the Jazz pickup for the neck position. Will it be too bright? How will it match with the Distortion output-wise? Will it have a good distorted tone?

I love the Pearly Gates in the neck, but I like the Screamin Demon a little better. It has a more even EQ and is very articulate. It is a terrific match for a Dist. in the bridge.

Even with high output pups I love the AII Pro in the neck. For cleans in the middle position it seems to balance and sweeten out the ceramic in the bridge. For solos it's just a pile of creamy goodness!

I agree, but I have one in another Les Paul. I want to try something different this time.

What about the output difference between the distortion and a vintage neck pickup such as the jazz?

You will have some difference. Some folks it bothers, others it doesn't. You can always adjust the height of the bridge pickup. That may help.

I knew a guy who had an Invader/Jazz set-up. It actually worked pretty well. It surprised the heck out of me. I personally have a Distortion bridge, 59 neck, in an archtop, and it works great. I love it, and wouldn't change it at all. I think we all get caught up in names sometimes, instead of sound. I doubt anyone would guess that I have a distortion in the neck of my archtop if they played it.

If it makes you feel any better, there are a few Ibanez (I'm pretty sure it's Ibanez) models that come with a 59/Distortion matchup.

Re: Neck pickup to go with Duncan Distortion?

I ordered the Duncan Distortion for the bridge pup, and combined it with a Duncan P90 at the neck position. The Warmoth guitar body just arrived and so in a short while I'll be able to share some personal feedback on this combination...although a couple of friends heard both pups in a guitar a while back and couldn't stop talking about how great both pickups were.

Re: Neck pickup to go with Duncan Distortion?

I have a Jazz/Distortion combo on my LTD, and so far I haven't had any problems in output, so I think it should be fine for your case :)

My vote is for the Jazz... Sweet and articulate whether it's clean or dirty. I have it in an Epi Lp. Granted I still don't like playing it, but I love the way it sounds now. You shouldn't be disappointed.

Re: Neck pickup to go with Duncan Distortion?

Have you tried raising the polepieces and lowering the actual pickup on the one you have in there?

Re: Neck pickup to go with Duncan Distortion?

I have an Epi LP with a Distortion in the bridge and a Seth in the neck. Great combo.

Re: Neck pickup to go with Duncan Distortion?

I used to have a Distortion in one of my guitars with a SH-1B in the neck the two balanced out beautifully.

Sorry to revamp this post, but I didn't want to make a new thread for the same question!
Just wondering what you like these days?!

I like the Sentient, Full Shred, and the Distortion neck pickups myself.
Curious about trying a Screamin Demon in the neck. I tried it in the bridge once, and it was too fat sounding for me.

Wait, did you just call the Screamin' Demon in the bridge "fat sounding"?

What does "fat" mean to you?

The Screamin Demon reminded me something like how a Custom Custom is thick and fat sounding compared to say a Custom 5.
Actually, I would say the SD I have sounded similar to the CC with the thick lows and mids, but tighter. I liked it better to be honest.
At least in my all mahogany BC Rich neck thru Beast.

I've also been curious about trying the Pearly Gates Plus in the neck position.
I guess what I'm searching for is something between the 59 or Sentient neck, and the Distortion neck.
Something with some bite and harmonics, but that stays extra tight in the low end.
