neck position:PEARLY GATES OR ALNICO PRO II?

Re: neck position:PEARLY GATES OR ALNICO PRO II?

57 classic: lacking bass, lacking treble. Lots of mids. Don't like 'em much. Yanked them from 2 guitars and began looking for better pickups.
59: plenty of bass, plenty of treble, not much mids. Scooped.
Pgn: deep, warm, fat, singing, soft attack.
APH: balanced, sweet, defined, soft attack, less low end than a PGn.
Aph slash: sorry, never tried them.

both APH and PGn are pretty sweet. Play your guitar unplugged and let your ears tell you...do you want more definition and balance, or do you want some extra thickness and weight? Either are a good complement to a CC in the bridge.

Definitely agree on '57's. I don't know what Gibson was thinking, but there are much better PAF's out there, and for less money.

Re: neck position:PEARLY GATES OR ALNICO PRO II?

When you put a bridge PU in the neck slot, the first thing you notice is that you lose treble. As it is, PGN's are warm PU's with a rounded high-end. A PGB is going to be even more so. Is that what you're going for?
PGb's are totally different sounding pickups to PGn's. While you are right in theory, that theory doesn't really apply to the Pearly gates set because of their unique nature and sound. The pgn is smooth deep and fat, and the pg bridge is spunky and bright (for an a2). I think tho, that a pgb would be less than inspiring in the neck, so on that we both agree.

Still,to the OP i don't see the point in putting bridge pickups in the neck. Other people who know a whole lot more about pickups (read Seymour) than most of us in the forum peanut galley have experimented extensively in tuning the sounds of pickups and their best uses and built one of the most successful pickup manufacturing businesses in the world based on their knowledge.

So are you saying the PGn adds more thickness and weight?

yeppa. A bit more than the APH which is more balanced.

I have a Jazz and a PGN and feel the PGN has more warmth and soul.

The Pearly Gates neck does have a gorgeous, singing, fat lead tone with great harmonics and character, in my Dominion however (a very articulate guitar), it lacks articulation and clarity for chording and picked arpeggios, therefore I have been thinking of replacing it with a Slash neck, Al pro II, or Seth Lover. I use a Screamin' Demon in the neck of another Dominion.

thanks for the detailed description per pickup...im looking for more mids and articulation... i guess the slash might just do the job

Re: neck position:PEARLY GATES OR ALNICO PRO II?

I use a PGb in the neck on my superstrat. For a while I kept it stock with the a2 mag and it sounded wonderful. Smooth, warm, soft attack and spongy bass. I swapped the mag to a UOA5 mag because I wanted a bit more treble and a tighter low end and now it's great. If your looking for a pup that will make a strat or bright guitar sound like a LP try the PATB-3 Blues model.

What about a magnet swap in that neck pickup? 59's have an A5, so why not try an A4, A3, or A2? Plenty of posts describing how the different magnets effect tone and what you can expect from a magnet swap. $5 in parts and 30 min in effort saves you from having to install a whole new pickup.
