Need a HH set for rhythem and HSH/HH for lead

Re: Need a HH set for rhythem and HSH/HH for lead

So for the Rhythem guitar I have done a bit more research and have these options to consider.

Nazgul or Duncan Distortion in the bridge and the Sentient or Jazz in the neck. Has anybody A/B'd these yet? I will most likely get all four and determine which set I like the most. But any pre-purchase help would be appreciated.

Nazgul on the bridge is wicked as hell.

As for the neck, both Sentient and Jazz are great. Either option, they both will not let you down.
(altho I highly recommend the Sentient if you are going for a Nazgul bridge)

Good luck!

The Nazgul is probably the most modern, heavy-focused pickup. It pairs well with the Sentient (which is not super-far away from the Jazz, btw). If all that guitar does is super heavy percussive riffs, the Nazgul is a great choice.

I am 100% going for this combo'd with the Sentient. I liked the cleans of the Sentient. Now I just need a good lead set of humbuckers and I'll be a happy camper. I am thinking of a reverse mid scooped bridge pickup for my lead guitar. I know what I want in a bridge pickup but am not completely sure what I want in the neck because how muddy neck pickups can get. I'd like the option to play cleans in the neck of the lead guitar, but its not the end of the world if I can't.

Re: Need a HH set for rhythem and HSH/HH for lead

For the lead neck:

Black Winter, Perpetual Burn and from DiMarzio: PAF Pro, Titan, LiquiFire, Illuminator, Gravity Storm, Evolution.

Read the descriptions, look at the BMT figures and listen to online demos.

Despite its listing, the Sentient is absolutely not a high output pickup. It is a vintage output pickup. I think it's a good choice for the rhythm guitar.

I think i'm also going to buy the dominion bridge from dimarzio to test out. Does anybody have any experience with the dominion set? One thing I notice about all of Dimarzio's pickups are the neck and bridge pickups BMT are matched. The dominion neck and bridge have the same BMT ratings, which feels a bit odd. How is the bridge and neck pickup in this set?

Re: Need a HH set for rhythem and HSH/HH for lead

Which pickups are you looking at with matched BMT figures that concern you, specifically?

I wouldn't worry about the Dominion neck.

Well if you look at the Evolution bridge and neck they are almost identical in BMT, i just find it odd that they are matched so closely. Mainly because Duncans are not matched like that. I would assume the bridge pickup placement is much brighter being so close to the bridge and the neck being much warmer because of it relative position to the neck.

I prefer the Evo 2 in the bridge, but the Evolution set balances very well between the two positions. There are countless demos on the web.

Re: Need a HH set for rhythem and HSH/HH for lead

Just wanted to touch base after i purchased the Nazgul and Sentient set. I like both pickups. The bridge is okay clean, not great but has everything i wanted in the bridge. The neck is great clean or dirty. The neck pickup has a nice crunchy hard rock sound but is not that great for pickups on the lead channel of my 6505+ combo. I need to get me a boost of some sort to test it out in all honesty. I love the set for what I wanted. They do everything I asked for and then some. Now I just need a piezo bridge to make it perfect, but that seems a bit involved and complicated so I will get my lead humbuckers next. I also picked up a hot rodded humbucker set too.

Re: Need a HH set for rhythem and HSH/HH for lead

What is it about the tone from the Sentient that doesn't work right with your high gain channel?

I'd recommend trying the Jazz, but it could easily be a step in the wrong direction. Then again, try it and you'll know either way.

Re: Need a HH set for rhythem and HSH/HH for lead

It works I'm just saying that it isn't your typical lead tone but I didn't want this guitar for that. I'll try a ts9 with it.

Gotcha. I have no idea what is a typical neck lead tone, though.

I think I need to spend a bit more time with the neck. So far I have just played it through the clean channel and some crunchy distortion. Maybe I just need to find the best amp settings.

Re: Need a HH set for rhythem and HSH/HH for lead

I didn't mean to sound as if I disagreed with you about whether you liked the Sentient's lead tone. My only point is people are all over the map when it comes to what the hi-gain lead tone from the neck position is supposed to sound like.

Since I generally don't like the sound of the Jazz for that purpose, there's a good chance I'd agree with you over the Sentient for your situation.

Re: Need a HH set for rhythem and HSH/HH for lead

I know what you meant. I just feel like it's a bit premature to day I don't like it. I've barely explored it and my new amp.

Re: Need a HH set for rhythem and HSH/HH for lead

My new posture is right now to recommend Black Winter to whoever wants to have tight rhythm (especially in a mahogany body). It's tight on low end and has an insane grind that enables it cover a wide range of heavy genres. Recently, I found out that it is perfect for good ol' hardcore punk, not so Nazgul. Roll off the volume knob and Holy Malcolm salutes you! Just try it. One more thing: you might want to pre-eq the Black Winter with an OD or eq pedal. I cut some bass and treble before the signal smashes the pre-amp. Otherwise, it has too much bite to my taste. But it may be different with your amp/cab.

Can't recommend anything on the second basswood/maple guitar.

Re: Need a HH set for rhythem and HSH/HH for lead

If it helps I am thinking about playing in standard tuning and drop d tuning. I'd like the pickups to be able to do both.

Otherwise, if you wouldn't go anywhere lower than drop D you don't really need a "pickup for low tunings". A thicker low E string may give you the tightness you need. My Duncan Designed did a decent job in Standard D with a .056 gauge.

Now that I see that you're happy with the Nazgul. You can happily ignore my posts. Nazgul is also a great choice. Glad you dig it!
