Need a pedal.

As the title reads, I need a new pedal. This is my current setup:

Agile LP copy with Duncan Custom in bridge->GE-7->Traynor YCV40.

In all honesty, I've only used my GE-7 once with the traynor and it got excessively loud (I use it as a boost and plan to keep it that way). However, I'm not content with the drive channel on the amp. It sounds pretty good with the gain dimed and the boost on, but other than that, it doesn't quite give me my tone.

I'm looking for an overdriven tone that has chuggy palm mutes as well as clarity for diminished/9th/13th/etc chords. So, I tried out a Bad Monkey into a Rivera tube amp (class a, 5 watts) and it sounded pretty amazing with the volume knob on the amp only at 9 o'clock.

Any suggestions? Would the Bad Monkey be a wise choice for alternative/indie rock? Think Saves The Day's "In Reverie".

Re: Need a pedal.

Bad Monkey is the best OD pedal for the money, hands down. If you buy one and don't like it, sell it to me.

Re: Need a pedal.

As Empty Pockets said, the Bad Monkey is a good Tube Screamer style OD. Some other options to consider are a clean boost (think Duncan Pickup Booster or ZVex SHO), a Treble booster (Simliar, but it boosts the treble a bit more and adds some gain, BYOC sells a great kit), a distortion box for more gain than an OD (Modded Boss DS-1 by Keeley, Analogman or Spina along with a million others) or Tube Overdrive (Duncan Twin Tube, Radial Tonebone, Vox Cooltron).

If you like the tone of your amp when you boost it with the EQ, consider the clean boost, it just drives the amp into more of it's natural OD. If you need some gain with it, the OD pedals, both tube and solid state are cool, they add gain AND push the front end harder, and then the distortion box is usually used as the gain source (although they can push the input harder too, I think most people use them around unity)

Re: Need a pedal.

I'm gonna recommend buying a Boss DS-1, then getting it into the hands of one of the pedal modding guys on here. I've done a couple that I thought came out great, before that, Joelap did a few for me that were terrific, and Stratdeluxer is rather famous (or infamous? :D) for his way with a DS-1.

I'm a legend in my own mind buddy! LOL...

Re: Need a pedal.

Boss SD-1 (not DS-1) it has some meat, sounds better for rhythm then the TS-9 and very low priced. You can mod it (or get it with a few cool mods) to make it even better...

Bad monkey is great for the price. I use it... Ilike it better however when I am using Single coils.. but that is personal..However if I turnt he volume low onthe guitar I enjoy it with humbuckers as well

My comparisons to the stock SD1/TS9...

The SD1 has more crunch factor, more gain and is tighter sounding...

The TS9 is smoother, not as much gain, compresses at high drive settings...It's smoother and not crunchy and with a nice smooth sustain...

The SD1 reminds me of an early Marshall type tone with it's tightness and crunch..I prefer the TS9/808 to the SD1 before and after mods..

Re: Need a pedal.

John,
How about the comparison of SD-1 vs. TS9 after both were moded by you? about the same as stock differences or no?
