need a solo boost

Hey guys, been a while since I've been on here but I'm workin on recording with my new band so I haven't even had much time to feed myself. Right now I'm coming across a problem seeing as how my other guitar player is using a dual rectumfrier and me using a 5150 2, when it comes time to step out for solos he has a ear spliting solo boost while I simply dip into the strings even harder than before. I'm looking for something that'll help my solos stand out in the mix without dropping some big coin that I don't have.

I'd love to hear any suggestions you guys might have and I do need them ASAP! Seeing as I've got just a day and a half off here.

Is the solo boost needed for live, or just recording?

If it's live, an EQ or a something like a Fulltone Fat Boost or SD Pup Booster in the FX loop will work fine.

If it's studio, just turn your amp up if/when you overdub solos or just get the solos up higher in the mix :)

You could just use your volume knob. Try playing rhythm with the guitar volume on 7. Turn the amp up a little louder so that it now matches the other player's rhythm level. Then when it comes time to solo, turn the guitar volume up to 10. If rolling back on the vol changes the sound too much, you could try re-eqing the amp alittle and turning the gain up (if you need more distortion). I'm not sure what kind of music you're playing, so if doing this takes too much of the edge off your sound, then a pedal might work better, but its worth a shot and is free.

Another cheap option is an MXR Micro Amp in the loop, my son uses one in the loop of his Laney for the same purpose. He tried an un-modded GE-7 but the Micro Amp is quieter and is just what you described - a one knobber. Try to get one of the older ones with the metal footswitch.

I'd love to be able to put a pedal in my loop but I've already got my BBE Sonic Maximizer which I run all the time. In answer to your guy's questions this is strickly a live issue. I'd love to be able to do it with just a volume knob but I can't stand the decay in my signal's integrity. I think that an EQ pedal in front of the amp may actually be my best option, I still want to hear all thoughts that any readers may have.

You could use a Boss Line Selector and use the 2 level knobs for your solo boost. The best option is really the MXR Micro Amp in the effects loop if you can patch it in.

Why can't you add a pedal to the chain in the loop?

Putting any kind of boost in front of the amp won't increase the volume the way that you're looking for... it will increase the gain.

Important point!

Are you looking for a "tonal" boost, so to speak "more cut"?? Or are you looking for more actual volume?

I have my loop on full time for my sonic maximizerso if I were to add the boost in my loop I would have to go from my convenient little pedal hangin off the back of my head to having more cables to sort through and organize live.

+1 on the EQ as a boost. A Boss GE-7 is inexpensive and allows you to boost/cut certain frequencies and raise/lower overall volume when kicked in.
