Need Amp Suggestions...

Ok been round the amp search for a while.... I do this for a hobby but take it serious as I just plain love playing. I play in a coverband and we literally play blues, foo fighters, STP, POD, Free, Black Crowes well you get the picture. My feedback below is from playing in a live band situation with another guitar. I think I suffer from trying to cover too much ground. I and am hopeful you all great people could help suggest a new turn in direction. My experiences in last 5 years has been:

1) Older version Bogner Shiva: could never get it cookin; too loud - but loved the gain on some levels

2) Older recto - loved it for chug but nothing else

3) Orange Rockerverb - loved it and I mean loved the gain ; but too dark - could not hear myself in the mix unless i was too loud

4) New 2010 recto - great amp; improvement on the older version but I find myself not finding any ground I like for classic/hard rock rock

If I could sum up my needs it would be for a versatile EL 34 crunch with amazing lead tone and respectible cleans that has a great loop for pedals.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Marc

What kind of Amp/Guitar combo does the other guitarist in your band use? What kind of Bass/Amp does your Bass player use? What kind of Guitar do you use?

Knowing all that stuff, is pretty important to helping ya figure out what Amp would work best for you...If ya wanna know what will help ya cut through, and get the sound ya want...we gotta know what it is you're trying to cut through. Ya know?

Re: Need Amp Suggestions...

I would find an amp which does the blues/rock/alternative type drive, then augment it with some pedals. The Fenders are good for blues and alternative, Vox are good too for the same type of thing.

Covers are tricky to get a simple setup for. You either don't get all the tones, or you have a massive pedalboard (or both).

I have a used jcm900 dual reverb I got for $500, it cuts thru the mix with tons of midrange and would fit the bill, I put pedals in front of the amp

Re: Need Amp Suggestions...

What's your budget? You may want to try a KT88 based amp. I love KT's more than Els.

Try a VHT/Fryette ala Deliverance or Sig-x.

A Splawn would be a good choice as well.

If you're going the budget route a USED JCM 900 or DSL would suffice.

Used Peavey Bandit
Digitech RP250

Done.

Something classier you say?

Line6 POD into a Tech 21 Power Engine
(or perhaps a Boss GT-8)

If you are covering, the sound is more important than tone, IMO - and the audience's opinion as well. Just program it all up and go!

Also - Mincer uses a Tech 21 combo plus Line6 M13 to great effect. Think about it.

Thanks for the suggestions! Both guitars are Gibbys with humbuckers. The other guitarist (LP) is using a JTM Marshall clone and pushes it with pedals. Part of the issue of getting lost in the mix is our drummer has one volume and its hard to get a nice balance.

Then an amp is not what you're actually looking for is it? It's a new drummer, one who is more dynamic. In that case, wrong forum bro.
